The Pure of the Buddhas
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas save beings without complaint or regret. This is because they possess no selfish desires and have no attachment to ; they act entirely for the sake of all beings. They perceive the suffering of beings and understand the urgency of their need for salvation. They do not waste a single moment, spending 24/7 performing and teaching beings without ever slackening.
Lessons from Worldly Devotion
To the fourfold assembly of disciples, I ask: what can you do without complaint or regret? In this world, parents and teachers often give everything for their children or students. They do this without asking for anything in return. Even when the children or students do not understand the kindness of their parents or teachers, and even when they fail to show gratitude or repay that kindness, the parents and teachers continue to give selflessly.
The Cycle of and Cause and Effect
Do you understand the truth of this situation? Everything that happens in this world is governed by the laws of karma and cause and effect. Whether it is the relationship between parents and children, or between teachers and students, all interactions occur within the cycle of rebirth. Even among the fourfold assembly of disciples, when you experience various states of mind, all of these experiences are still unfolding within the cycle of rebirth and the laws of karma and cause and effect:
- Comparisons and discriminations between one another.
- of gain and loss.
- Emotional fluctuations such as , anger, sorrow, and happiness.
- Jealousy or judgment of what is good or bad.
Transcending the Cycle of Rebirth
If you wish to escape the constraints of the laws of karma and cause and effect, you must follow the example of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Those who have transformed their karma and realised their true nature can act with autonomy. They are no longer bound by the forces of karma. They act without complaint or regret. They hold no selfish desires and have no need for self-protection. They do not seek even the slightest reward. They work for the benefit of the masses rather than for themselves.
The True Meaning of Selfless Service
Look at Practitioner Su. To perform Chao Du for the demon crowds, Practitioner Su has endured the demon crowds casting spells to attack and suffered great physical pain. Yet, Practitioner Su has never uttered a single word of complaint. This is the true meaning of acting without complaint or regret.
