The Illusion of the Seeking Mind
Throughout history, many seekers have wandered in search of a place to rest their weary hearts. They hope to find a sanctuary where their restless minds can finally settle. Yet, when one asks, "Where is the heart?" one finds that it cannot be located. The truth is that there is no heart to be found; therefore, why must one continue to search for it? This realisation is the very act of letting go of the heart, and in that letting go, one attains a profound sense of coolness and ease.
When you have a heart that clings, it will always seek something to attach itself to. You may feel that you have found peace only when you have found a place to anchor your thoughts. However, if the object of your attachment changes, your heart will inevitably change with it. How can such a heart ever be truly at peace? If the heart finds no place to attach, it feels as though it is drifting, helpless, and alone.
The Necessity of Meditative Concentration
If your heart lacks meditative concentration, it will be constantly disturbed by external environments and pulled by the influence of and other beings. This is the common condition of most people. If your heart possesses meditative concentration, however, you will be able to remain undisturbed by external conditions and free from the pull of karmic forces. This is the state of a stable practitioner.
If your practice has not yet reached the point where you have transcended the seeking heart, you must continue your diligent practice. You must strive to:
- Transform your instability into meditative concentration
- .Transform your anxiety into peace.Bring your drifting spirit to a state of stillness.
Continue this journey until you reach the state of having no heart, where you can see your true nature and engage in the work of saving beings.
The Path to Stillness
To assist all beings in settling their unstable, anxious, and drifting hearts, the Pure Land has been revealed. Within the Pure Land practice, you are encouraged to:
- Recite the six-character Buddha-name
- of Namo Amituofo with sincerity.Engage in the purification of your Body-Mind-Spirit
- .Chant until the Buddha-name
- becomes second nature, maintaining a continuous, pure stream of thought.Allow the Buddha-name to flow from your heart without interruption, which is the mark of successful skills
- .Vow to be reborn in the West, thereby fulfilling the Buddha's path and aligning with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
Transcending the Cycle of Suffering
Where does the heart reside? If your heart suffers along with the birth, aging, sickness, and death of the physical body, then your heart is trapped within these sufferings, and you will find it difficult to endure. If your heart clings tightly to subjectivity, personal , and ego-attachment, it will be difficult to find true happiness. If your heart fluctuates with the waves of , anger, sorrow, and pleasure, it will be difficult for you to be the master of your own life. If your heart turns according to external conditions, it will be difficult to find peace.
However, if you understand the importance of diligent practice and continue to move forward, you will be able to attain purification and see your true nature. If you can distinguish between the illusory and the real, you will not be deceived by illusory environments. If your heart is free from fluctuations, you will remain in a state of constant joy, free from sorrow. If you possess meditative concentration, you can transform the environment rather than being turned by it. If you face every challenge with diligent practice and never retreat, you will see your true nature and become the master of your own destiny.
