Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on the sixteenth of April, 2023, during the noon offering.

The Illusion of Material Security

In this world, people are deeply attached to the concept of having. When you possess wealth and material goods, you feel a sense of security. You can see these things, touch them, and hold them, which provides a comforting sense of abundance. Conversely, when faced with the concept of nothingness, you often feel a sense of unease, a fear of lack, or a feeling of insufficiency. This is why you constantly pursue more, striving to fill your life with possessions to achieve a sense of satisfaction and peace of mind.

However, you often overlook the invisible treasures of merit and virtue. Because these spiritual assets cannot be seen or touched, it is difficult for you to perceive their existence, and thus you neglect their profound importance. In truth, both in your daily practice and throughout the entirety of your life, these invisible treasures are essential.

The True Wealth of the Spirit

Merit and virtue serve as your true internal sustenance. They protect you in several vital ways:

  • They ensure you are respected by all beings. They shield you from the interference of malevolent energies and negative spirits. They act as a genuine foundation for your spiritual growth.

The Infinite Life Sutra teaches that one cannot be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss with only a small amount of good roots, , and Causal Conditions. The Blessings mentioned here refer to the accumulation of merit and virtue. You must cultivate these diligently, for they are the necessary provisions for your journey to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The Infinite Potential of the True Self

When you engage in practice to realise your true self, you may look into your own nature and perceive it as nothing—as if there is nothing there at all. Yet, in reality, this nothingness is the source of everything. It is the state that is capable of giving birth to all things. This nothingness contains infinite potential, much like the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss itself.

The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is the manifestation of the Buddha nature within you. It is a realm that:

  • Can fulfil the deepest wishes of all beings. Is capable of manifesting all things, as it is projected by the hearts of beings.Exists because the true self is inherently pure and filled with Goodness.

Within this state of pure Goodness, one can manifest and perceive all things. This is the meaning of the infinite!

The Compassionate Action of the Awakened

Those who have realised their true nature are equipped with inexhaustible merit and virtue. Because they possess this infinite spiritual wealth, they are able to perform the work of a :

  • They can save countless suffering beings. They can assist in resolving the conflicts between and their debtors. They can respond to the needs of all beings, manifesting whatever is required to help them.

Such a being acts with , manifesting according to Causal Conditions. Everything is done from a state of no-mind, yet it reveals an infinite capacity to help and to heal. By letting go of the attachment to having, you discover the true wealth that is already within you.
