From the perspective of the Buddha’s eye, the human body is not merely a singular entity. It is a vast, intricate universe composed of countless cells. Each of these cells possesses its own unique life cycle, its own true self, and its own form of .
The Infinite Worlds Within
Within each cell, there exist countless smaller structures. These are not merely biological components; they are themselves living entities. Each of these tiny structures contains a spirit. Thus, we find that there are infinite spirits residing within every single cell of your body. Every one of these cells, and every spirit within them, possesses its own distinct consciousness.
While these structures are invisible to your physical eyes, they become visible when magnified hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of times. It is truly astonishing to observe that these cells function much like human beings. Their internal structures are complex, housing countless smaller cells that work in harmony to maintain the function of the larger cell. Whether large or small, every cell is a life, and every life is a spirit.
The Cycle of Impermanence
Different cells within the human body exhibit varying levels of activity. Some are highly active, some move slowly, and others appear dormant. Regardless of their size or their level of movement, all of these processes occur within the realm of impermanence. This means that the countless cells and the infinite spirits within your body are all beings caught in the cycle of rebirth.
They are all subject to the laws of . Unless they attain the state of an awakened being—meaning that both you, the human, and the infinite spirits within your cells realise your true nature—you will remain under the control of karma and the cycle of rebirth.
The Vastness of the Microscopic
When we magnify microorganisms, we can see their internal structures. Within these structures, there are further life forms, and within those life forms, there are spirits. To the spirit residing within such a tiny life form, that microorganism is as vast and expansive as the entire universe. Yet, to us, these microorganisms are incredibly small, and their internal structures are smaller still.
These spirits within the cells and microorganisms are invisible to your physical eyes, yet they are undeniably real. Each cell is formed by the coming together of the four elements. The spirits within the microscopic structures of these cells are sentient beings with karmic affinity to that cell.
The Suffering of Separation
When the life of a cell comes to an end, the cell begins to wither and die. When the true self of that cell departs from its outer shell, it must endure the suffering of the separation of the four elements. At that moment, the countless spirits within the cell also depart rapidly from the shell. They follow their karma and continue to reincarnate within this very body.
Their true selves also follow their karma, continuing to cycle within the human body. These cell spirits are also beings caught in the cycle of rebirth, and they never truly escape the six realms of existence. In this sense, the human body serves as the very place where these cell spirits undergo their cycle of rebirth.
