The Mystery of Substitution: Words of Namo Amituofo
Day 15 of the Taiwan, Hong Kong, and World Disaster Relief Dharma Assembly

The Vessel of Many Spirits
The physical body is a precious vessel, yet it is often occupied by spirits that are not our own. This phenomenon of substitution means that the life we are living is not entirely our own, but is instead influenced by the karmic debts and spirits that reside within us. When we speak of this, we must ask: how can one truly awaken to this reality? When your own body is being used as a substitute for another, how can you possibly perceive it? When the spirit is clouded, and the true self find it difficult to take charge of their own destiny.
Recognising the Signs of Influence
Often, the presence of these external influences manifests through intense and uncontrollable states of mind. You may find yourself experiencing:
- Stubbornness:
- An inability to let go of fixed ideas or rigid perspectives.Emotional Volatility:
- Sudden, intense shifts in mood that feel foreign to your usual temperament.High Excitement:
- Periods of agitation or manic energy that lack a clear, grounded purpose.Deep Despair: Overwhelming of sadness or depression that seem to arise without a logical cause.
These are not merely personality traits; they are often the outward signs of a deeper, hidden substitution. These states are like shadows cast upon your life, revealing the presence of spirits that have taken hold. A wise person, one who is diligent in their practice, will be able to perceive these signs and recognise when their own nature is being obscured by these external forces.
The Sacred Connection Between Body and Spirit
Most people in this world do not understand the true nature of their physical bodies and their spiritual essence. This physical body is, in a sense, a temporary substitute, but the spirit is the eternal existence of your original nature. If you wish to live as your true self, you must understand that your life is a harmonious cooperation between the physical body and your self-nature. Without this vital connection, the spirit cannot manifest its true light in this world, and it becomes difficult to escape the cycle of rebirth and the suffering of life and death.
This human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Because it is so rare, it is a vessel that can be used to achieve great things. However, when this body is controlled by external forces, it becomes difficult for your self-nature to take the lead. Because there are many spirits residing within the body, their suffering becomes your suffering. When you find yourself unable to bear these burdens, you must ask: in which direction should you turn to find transformation? It is difficult for to understand this alone, but the power of this substitution is truly difficult to conceal.
Reclaiming Your True Nature
Being controlled or restrained by these forces is ultimately a result of the karmic seeds that your own self-nature has attracted. The spirits that arrive are drawn to you by the resonance of your own heart. Therefore, in the midst of the great assembly, your heart should remain pure and selfless. Do not allow yourself to be swayed by the common states of the crowd. By maintaining a pure heart, you will transcend the ordinary, and your self-nature will naturally be free. You will no longer be a substitute for others, and you will be able to fulfil the true meaning of your existence. All of you must remember to be grateful and never engage in actions that are contrary to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. Namo Amituofo.
