The Essence of Unceasing Diligence

What does it mean to be diligent and unceasing in one's practice? It means to work with constant, unwavering effort, never allowing oneself to become lazy, complacent, or indulgent. This is the fundamental requirement for every practitioner on the path to . Whether in worldly affairs or in the pursuit of transcendental liberation, a mindset of persistent effort, coupled with actual, concrete action and steadfastness, is the indispensable condition for achieving success in one's spiritual path. To truly succeed in the Buddha's gate, one must master the principles of right faith and right understanding in Buddhist education, and uphold the path of faith, aspiration, and practice. Only through such diligent practice can one make genuine progress in their spiritual achievements and reach the ultimate goal of liberation.

Cultivating the Heart of Persistent Effort

To practise with unceasing diligence, one must focus on several key areas of transformation. First, you must resolve to change your personality traits. You must make a firm determination to eliminate the —greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt—as well as the : wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep. By doing so, you allow your body, mind, and spirit to become pure, which is the practical benefit of unceasing diligence. Second, you must follow the teachings with absolute sincerity. Listen to the guidance and corrections provided by Namo Amituofo, the patriarchs and venerable masters, Practitioner Su, and other true spiritual friends. Accept their advice with deep gratitude and immediately follow their instructions to change your ways. Third, you must cherish your time. The human body is precious, and life is limited. Do not let your time pass in idle chatter, delusions, attachments, or aimless thinking.

The Infinite Power of the Holy Name

Every second, keep the Holy Name "Namo Amituofo" in your heart and on your lips. This Holy Name is the very essence of the Pure Land, gathering all the merits, virtues, and great vows of . Within the entire realm of emptiness, there is no other power that can replace the majestic, awe-inspiring strength of this Holy Name. You must put in the work, gathering your focus and concentrating entirely on the Buddha-name, never letting it slip away, so that you may receive the magnificent benefits of the Dharma. Whether you are working, eating, dressing, or walking, hold fast to the Buddha-name, never letting it leave your heart or your lips. If you can maintain this even while sleeping, allowing the Buddha-name to flow continuously from your heart and enter through your ears, you will create a cycle that never ends, preventing delusions and other distracting states from manifesting. When you maintain the Buddha-name 24/7, until you reach the state of chanting without chanting and chanting without the thought of chanting, you have truly achieved success in your diligent practice.

The Discipline of Daily Practice

Maintain the purification of your body, mind, and spirit, and never allow them to become polluted. Regardless of the circumstances, your daily practice—including reciting the Sutras, performing prostrations, and chanting the Buddha-name—must be completed. This daily practice is the fundamental work of every practitioner. In the Pure Land path, which relies on both and the power of the Buddha, if you wish to receive the Buddha's , you must first diligently complete your own daily practice so that the Buddha's power can be effectively applied to you. Whether you are feeling physically unwell, experiencing aches and pains, travelling, facing biting cold, or enduring the scorching sun, you must complete your daily practice, or even double your efforts. Such unceasing diligence, maintained with consistency, will surely lead to progress. If you find excuses to forgive yourself or relax your discipline, it becomes easy to fall into laziness and eventually regress.

Overcoming Obstacles on the Path

Even when your personality traits and habits manifest and make it difficult to maintain control, or when you encounter trials and tribulations—such as others provoking you, slandering you, misunderstanding you, or obstructing your practice—you must still keep your heart in a state of meditative concentration. Being able to hold fast to the Buddha-name and continue your daily practice without interruption is the true definition of unceasing diligence. Listening to Dharma talks and studying the teachings is an essential method of learning in the Buddha's gate. In the traditional, face-to-face method of teaching, the speaker can directly observe the reactions of the listeners and adjust the interaction accordingly, while the listeners can directly receive the benefits of the Dharma. If you can overcome and mental agitation during the times you listen to the Dharma, perform prostrations, or recite the Sutras, this is a practical manifestation of unceasing diligence.

The Compassionate Vow to Save All Beings

Always maintain your awareness, for the moment you relax, you may create . Your are always by your side. Observe your own words, actions, and the sincerity of your practice. If they see that you are truly diligent and unceasing, they may soften their intent to seek revenge, allowing you to avoid suffering. If you are fortunate enough to encounter the skillful means of Practitioner Su to resolve these karmic grievances, it is a great blessing for all beings, providing the magnificent Dharma affinity to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. The suffering of beings never ceases for even a fraction of a second. Therefore, our mission to save the world and liberate beings must never pause; we must be diligent and unceasing. This is the heavy responsibility borne by every practitioner and the monastics. By being diligent and unceasing, you will soon realise your true nature. Only after you have saved yourself will you have the capacity and the skills to save others and guide them to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Even after realising your true nature, you must not be lazy, and indeed you will not be, because within your true self, there is only diligent effort, and the word 'laziness' does not exist. In the view of oneness, where all beings and oneself are one, you will only wish for suffering beings to leave suffering behind as soon as possible, and you will work even harder to save them. Although you follow conditions without forcing them, if there is an affinity, you must seize the opportunity and never let a single second pass without helping others. If we miss this opportunity, when will we ever be liberated? This is the great of all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and those who have realised their true nature; thus, the work of saving beings never ceases. We are grateful for the compassion of the Buddha. Namo Amituofo.
