The Foundation of the Buddha’s Gate

Within the Buddha’s gate, the principle of is the essential key to attaining the state of an awakened being and becoming a Buddha. When you truly embrace the state of no-self, you reveal your original, true nature. This is the path of the humble and modest practitioner. Conversely, when you are attached to the ego—the sense of a permanent, separate self—it becomes difficult to achieve your true potential. Without the opportunity to attain the state of an awakened being, the Buddha's path remains incomplete. Those who are consumed by arrogance and self-importance often find themselves trapped in this cycle, unable to progress.

The Heavy Burden of Arrogance

Those who are humble and modest possess a natural grace. They are polite, free from the poison of arrogance, and always ready to learn with a respectful heart. Such individuals are endowed with virtue and possess a vast, inclusive heart. In contrast, those who are arrogant and self-important often lack basic courtesy. Because they believe they are superior to others or possess talents that exceed those of ordinary people, they struggle to accept the strengths and virtues of others. This leads to several spiritual obstacles:

  • The rise of jealousy:
  • Because they cannot acknowledge the goodness in others, they easily fall into the trap of envy.A lack of patience:
  • Because they cannot tolerate the perceived shortcomings of others, they quickly become irritable and prone to anger. The manifestation of unvirtuous traits: This arrogance is a clear sign of a lack of inner virtue, which obscures the light of the true nature.

The Necessity of

The habits and personality traits we are born with are deeply ingrained and difficult to remove. Unless one undergoes a profound and painful experience that forces the awareness to manifest, it is incredibly difficult to change your ways. Arrogance acts as a heavy barrier to attaining the state of an awakened being, causing harm to both oneself and others. Without the light of awakening, it is truly difficult to be saved from the cycle of suffering. However, the humble and modest practitioner knows their own shortcomings and constantly seeks to improve. They are the ones who truly engage in diligent practice and achieve success. When a practitioner has true attainment, their wisdom becomes clear, and they can attain the state of an awakened being and reap the fruits of the path. Their skills and virtues then become a source of benefit for all beings who are connected by karmic affinity.

The Grace of Humility

Those who are arrogant and self-important are like rigid, brittle stalks. When the winds of adversity blow, they snap easily, and they are destined to lead a lonely and isolated life. In contrast, the humble and modest practitioner is like a soft, flexible branch. They are difficult to break because they possess the strength of yielding. They are like stalks of rice heavy with grain; they bow low and sway gracefully with the breeze. This is the true state that every practitioner should aspire to embody. It is a state of being that naturally attracts others, as people are always willing to draw near to, learn from, and follow those who walk the path with such gentle, humble wisdom.
