The Shackles of the Ego

Selfishness is a heavy chain that binds us to the cycle of rebirth. When we are consumed by , we think only of our own interests in every situation. We prioritise our own needs, especially when it comes to our family members and friends. We often find ourselves hoarding the best things for ourselves, only considering sharing what remains after we have secured our own comfort. Even when we do perform acts of giving, if the thought of 'I' remains, there is still selfishness present. This 'I' is the root of our suffering.

We cling to the concepts of 'my' possessions, 'my' house, 'my' husband, 'my' wife, 'my' children, and 'my' grandchildren. We view these relationships and material goods as permanent fixtures of our lives. However, we must realise that all sentient beings are connected by . When these conditions gather, we meet; when these conditions are exhausted, we part. The world is like a fleeting dream, and our attachments are merely ripples in a vast ocean. If we remain trapped in the illusion of 'I' and 'mine,' we are moving further away from the state of an awakened being.

The Radiance of a Selfless Heart

To be truly selfless is to 'see through' the illusion of the self and 'let go' of all attachments. Consider your wealth and prosperity; these are the fruits of the seeds you planted in past lives. Knowing this, you should practise Generosity with a heart that is free from the desire for reward. When you give, do not seek anything in return. This is the true cultivation of merit. A practitioner who works with a sincere heart, without a personal agenda or a self-centred standpoint, is one who is truly walking the Buddha's path.

In your diligent practice, you must strive to act for the benefit of all beings at all times and in all places. When there is a benefit, share it equally; when there is happiness, enjoy it together. When your skills in practice reach a high level, you will be able to save infinite beings. Such a life of selflessness earns the respect of humans, heavenly beings, and spirits alike. It is this spirit of selflessness that allows your spiritual achievements to flourish. When you chant Buddha's name with this pure heart, you will surely be welcomed by the Buddha upon your rebirth in the . This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
