The Path to Buddhahood

Teachings from the Teacher, recorded by chief writer: Venerable HaiZe

The Peril of a Divided Mind

Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju: You stand with one foot on two boats, or perhaps one foot on each. The boats drift upon the water, and you cannot find your footing. You fall into the middle of the water, losing both vessels entirely. The boats sail away to distant shores, but where are you to go? If you swim to the shore, you must walk the path alone, lost in the vastness, knowing not where to turn.

The Clarity of Single-Minded Devotion

Why not, from the very beginning, place both feet upon a single boat? Wherever the boat travels, that is where your heart is directed. When the boat reaches its destination, your body arrives there as well. This is the essence of single-mindedness in our practice. It is the clarity of knowing exactly where you are going and why you are travelling there.

The Path of Total Renunciation

In your practice, you must learn to let go. Whether you are a monastic or a lay practitioner, you must be willing to renounce all. Release your emotions and your family ties; keep only the suffering beings in your heart. Through your practice, you come to know the suffering of all beings, and you realise that this body exists only for them.

Returning to the True Self

Dedicate your heart to the practice for the sake of all beings, and purify your body and mind for their benefit. Only then can you rediscover your true self and walk firmly upon the Buddha's path. Follow Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su, and you will surely save all beings and lead them into the .
