The Journey of the Spirit

My children, consider the twenty-four hours that make up your day. How many of those hours are you truly awake and clear-minded? Conversely, how much time do you spend drifting into the fog of , allowing your spirit to wander into other spaces? When you are awake, what are your actions? When you are drowsy, your body may be still, but where has your spirit gone? If your spirit enters these other spaces, what it sees, hears, and does is often tainted by impurity. However, if your spirit remains in control, you can use that time to help others, save beings, and accumulate merit and virtue. Throughout the 24/7 of the day, you should strive to remain awake and alert at all times.

The Vigilance of the Mind

Chanting the Buddha-name is the most effective way to assist in your purification. This process of Purifying , heart, and spirit must be carried out continuously—in every second, every minute, and every passing moment. To maintain this state of constant awareness, you must hold the Buddha-name in your heart at all times and maintain pure thoughts. You must be especially cautious regarding your Body, Speech, and Mind, as well as every thought and intention that arises. It is said that for beings in this world, every thought and intention is nothing but , and every action is nothing but sin. You must be particularly wary of subtle, fleeting thoughts that arise unintentionally, as these can create new sins or trigger the manifestation of past karma. Therefore, maintaining constant awareness is of the utmost importance for every practitioner.

The Conditions for Lasting Clarity

When you are truly awake, you can remain unpolluted by external environments and distance yourself from places of impurity. Remember, you must focus on changing your own personality and traits, rather than trying to change others. To maintain this state of constant awareness, you must meet several conditions:

  • Continuous Chanting: If you keep the Buddha-name flowing in your heart 24/7, you will naturally remain awake and alert.
  • Dissolving Karma: You must work to dissolve your past sins so that you are not obstructed or interfered with by your own karma.
  • Changing Personality: You must change your personality traits. Do not let your ego or negative habits arise, as these lead to enmity with other beings and attract to manifest before you. When these beings appear, it becomes easy to fall into a state of drowsiness and enter other spaces, making it difficult to maintain your clarity.
  • Purifying Body-Mind-Spirit: If your body, heart, and spirit are polluted, it is impossible to maintain a clear and bright state. You must purify yourself, for only those who are pure and untainted can preserve their vital energy.

The Wisdom of Silence

If you waste your energy on emotional fluctuations, internal conflicts, or unwholesome actions of body, speech, and mind, you will find it impossible to stay awake. This is why the practice of silence—refraining from unnecessary speech—is considered a wonderful method in the Buddha’s gate for maintaining constant awareness. By guarding your speech and focusing your energy, you protect your clarity and ensure that your spirit remains aligned with the path of . Namo Amituofo.
