The Essence of Sincerity

Honest chanting is of paramount importance in your spiritual journey. Many practitioners ask: how can one truly achieve honest chanting, ensuring that each recitation follows the last without interruption? How can one reach a state where the mind opens naturally, without relying on artificial methods or complex techniques? This is the core of the practice, and it requires both diligence and a deep understanding of the mind.

The Challenge of the Wandering Mind

During your practice, it is common for delusions to arise suddenly, causing your chanting to be interrupted. If you possess a high level of sensitivity and awareness, you will notice these interruptions shortly after they occur, allowing you to immediately return your focus to the Buddha-name. However, if you are not yet aware of your own mental state, you may find that a significant amount of time has passed before you realise your chanting has ceased. Only then do you pick up the thread of the Buddha-name once more.

Similarly, you may be interrupted by external circumstances or the need to attend to daily tasks. If you are mindful, you will be able to resume your chanting the moment you finish your duties. The goal is to reach a state where your chanting becomes continuous—a state of chanting without chanting, and non-chanting while still chanting. In this profound state, the Buddha-name does not stop; it resonates within your heart and circulates throughout your entire body.

The Power of Meditative Concentration

When you reach this level, even while you are busy handling affairs or navigating the complexities of daily life, the Buddha-name will naturally arise within you. This is the sign that you have attained meditative concentration through your practice. Even when you are in motion, your heart remains still and focused, and the Buddha-name continues to flow without interruption. Although you may be occupied with worldly matters, your heart remains clear and bright, and the Buddha-name remains constant. At this stage, you have a genuine hope of achieving rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.

Resolving the Roots of Suffering

It is important to understand that even if you chant honestly in your daily life, if your personality remains unchanged and your has not been transformed, you will still face the inevitable challenges of life. You may still experience old age, sickness, and the suffering that arises when the elements separate at the time of death. These are the signs that your have not yet been resolved. During times of illness, these creditors may be present within or around your body, seeking to settle old grievances and repay past harms.

When the suffering of sickness and the fear of death manifest, do you forget the Buddha-name? For those who find their chanting easily interrupted during peaceful times, it becomes even more difficult to maintain the Buddha-name when gripped by the agony of illness or the approach of death. If you cannot maintain your focus during these critical moments, the Western Pure Land will naturally feel distant. This is the primary reason why many who have chanted for a lifetime still fail to achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
