The Subtle Roots of Evil

Evil is a destructive force that manifests in many forms. It is not merely the outward appearance of harmful actions, but the most subtle movements within our character. These internal distortions are often the most difficult to perceive, as they cling to us like a shadow, constantly evolving and mutating within the mind.

In this world, we see many different forms of evil emerging. Often, these manifestations arise because individuals have been treated unfairly, or have suffered deep wounds and trauma that have gone unnoticed for a long time. When a person’s heart becomes distorted, they no longer function as a normal human being. Their thoughts and may begin to shift, leading to illusory forms, auditory distortions, and hallucinations. When these distortions take hold, a person may commit negative out of a misguided sense of self-protection or an inability to control their own impulses. This leads to tragic events that can cause immense suffering to innocent people. If such evil manifests in major social crimes, how many lives are shattered? How many innocent souls are harmed by the unchecked darkness of a single, distorted mind?

The Demon Nature Within

We must ask ourselves: where does this power come from? Why have we lost sight of our own inherent Goodness? The heart is complex, and it contains many layers. Our destiny in this life is often shaped by challenges we cannot overcome, or by the influence of our own habits, our upbringing, and the environment in which we live. Every change in our circumstances has the potential to trigger evil desires.

Evil is, in essence, a form of desire. Even if our moral foundations tell us that certain actions are wrong, the overwhelming craving to satisfy these dark impulses can be intoxicating. Some people find a twisted pleasure in seeing others suffer, or in watching others face harsh judgment. This craving to satisfy one’s own heart through the pain of others is a common, yet dangerous, psychological mutation. In the Buddha’s teachings, this is referred to as the demon nature that resides within everyone. You should look within yourself: does this exist in your own heart?

The Paradox of Love and Evil

Whether or not you find this darkness within is less important than how you choose to address it. The most critical task is to learn how to modify these tendencies and how to stop evil at its source. It is far more effective to adjust the internal conditions that lead to evil than to attempt to force the eradication of evil itself. If we rely on forced changes, we will miss the vital moments of transformation—the very places where the light of awareness is most needed.

The root of all evil is, surprisingly, love. Every act of evil has a story behind it—a story of love, or a desperate longing for love. But what causes this love to transform into hatred and evil? This is the confusion inherent in the Five Turbidities and Evil World. There are many reasons why we undergo such a transformation, including unfulfilled longing, jealousy, competition, greed, possession, and attachment. When these become extreme, they lead to persistent evil thoughts and actions that become difficult to stop. This is common in the world today, but it is not something to fear. What is truly frightening is the lack of genuine education that teaches people how to truly stop these evil thoughts.

True Education for the Soul

Education must understand the human heart and its subtle changes. We must learn to see the minute shifts in human nature to effectively guide and transform these seeds of evil. Those who commit evil are not always the ones who appear evil on the surface. In fact, those who appear to be virtuous often harbour the deepest, most unpredictable sources of evil within their hearts.

The current methods of education in the world are no longer sufficient to address these issues, as the roots of evil have grown too deep. We require the Wisdom of the Truth to guide these thoughts away from darkness and toward the light of Goodness. Only by being willing to truly let go of and resolve the evil desires within can we hope to improve the state of the world. Evil can be transformed, but it requires the right kind of teaching.

Returning to the Original Nature

Consider the prison system: many inmates are punished for their crimes and condemned by society, but their evil does not necessarily cease simply because they are behind bars. Conversely, the potential for Goodness within them does not disappear either. This is a profound truth that everyone should reflect upon. Similarly, are the people in the outside world, who have never faced legal punishment, truly pure and good? Many still harbour significant evil thoughts.

How, then, can evil be stopped? How can we remove the deviant intentions from our hearts? You must begin by forgetting the self. You must strive to see the Goodness in others and refuse to dwell on their faults. You must realise that the physical body is illusory and that all the desires of the flesh are empty. Do not be deceived by your emotions or by anything that stirs your heart. You must learn to adjust yourself to a state where nothing exists—a state of emptiness in the heart. You must be prepared to let go of everything. Only then can your Goodness be expressed in its purest form. Because Goodness and evil walk side by side, when your Goodness is no longer enough to mask your evil, you must readjust everything. You must cleanse your heart, reduce your desires, and return to the original nature you possessed before you were even born. When you are no longer tied to this world, you can truly begin your practice.

This is not a difficult task. With the guidance of a true spiritual friend and the firm determination of your own vows, you can change your life and start anew. Do not let evil transform your heart. Instead, let Goodness govern everything. Take charge of your own state of mind, keeping it pure and kind. Goodness requires cultivation, and a state of purity can transform all evil. This world lacks genuine love and care. Only through pure education—a form of care that is free from selfish attachment—can we help everyone find their way back to themselves. Let us follow the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and never let ourselves be consumed by evil. Namo Amituofo.
