The Power of a Single Thought
Teachings from Ashvaghosha Bodhisattva

The Pivotal Nature of the Mind
In this world, whether our experiences are good or bad, whether we face life or death, whether we choose to remain or depart, or whether we perceive things as true or false—all of these outcomes are determined within a single thought. Everything, without exception, originates from this one moment of intention. If you wish for your practice to bear fruit, you must realise that the difference between success and failure also rests upon a single thought. Within the mundane world, our emotions rise and fall in a split second, and our intentions shift between Goodness and evil in the blink of an eye. You must develop awareness; you must be conscious of the present moment and transform every thought into the right path.
Consider how this manifests in our reality. Some individuals who are known for their wrongdoings may suddenly perform an act of Goodness simply because a virtuous thought arose within them in a single moment. Conversely, a thief who sees something they lack—be it money or a desired object—may commit a theft because of a greedy thought that took hold in a split second. For the practitioner, the purity or impurity of one's character is entirely dependent on these fleeting thoughts, one after another. An awakened being sees every thought clearly. They do not dare to be arrogant, nor do they dare to be indulgent, because they know that if they are even slightly careless, the opportunity for liberation may vanish in an instant.
The Interaction of and Reality
When our Six Roots come into contact with the , we are inevitably influenced by the external world. Our physical bodies, down to every single cell, are affected by:
- Sights
- Sounds
- Smells
- Tastes
- Touch
- Mental phenomena
These interactions unfold into what we call our personal experiences and physical sensations. In the Zen tradition, there is an internal experience that is difficult to describe in words. During meditation, as you observe your own breathing, you will begin to discover your wandering thoughts—your own intentions. You will also notice that physical sensations, such as pain or numbness in the legs, are merely a form of touch. This is why those who study Zen sit in meditation, cross their legs, and observe their breath. They do this to learn the practice of stopping and seeing, and to subdue the rising and falling of their inner afflictions and wandering thoughts.
The Path of
The Pure Land path, however, uses the Buddha-name to subdue the heart. We rely on the Buddha-vow of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to subdue our own afflictions, to deliver sentient beings, and to eventually achieve our own Buddha-land. By aligning our hearts with the Buddha-heart and our actions with the Buddha-vow, we engage in the purification of every thought and intention. Therefore, all achievements in our practice are also found within a single thought. The Pure Land school emphasises that observing the heart is of the utmost importance. By ensuring that every single thought is pure and filled with Goodness, we can benefit all beings, save beings, and successfully attain our future birth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
A Call to Constant Awareness
To all those in the Western Land of Nature, I ask you: do you observe your thoughts at every moment? Are they truly pure and filled with Goodness? Chanting the name of Namo Amituofo is the most virtuous act one can perform in a single thought. Members of the fourfold assembly, you must constantly observe where your thoughts reside. If you feel stifled or overwhelmed by sorrow, you must awaken your awareness. In that very split second, transform your thought into an . This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Shi Hailiang.
