The Power of Kind Words
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded on April 26, 2024, during the Noon Offering
The Sacred Source of Guidance
At Hsiang Kuang: A Sacred Sanctuary, we are blessed with a continuous flow of profound guidance. This includes the direct teachings from Namo Amituofo, which we call the Buddha’s words. We also receive the invaluable wisdom shared by the patriarchs and venerable masters, as well as the clear, practical explanations provided by Practitioner Su. When these teachings reach us, they often have the effect of nectar poured upon the crown of the head, instantly refreshing and clarifying our minds.
Furthermore, we are supported by our true spiritual friends and fellow practitioners who offer us gentle counseling and timely reminders. These forms of guidance—designed to teach the heart, urge us forward, and encourage us toward Goodness—are what we call kind words.
The Art of Listening and Receiving
Those who truly know how to listen will take these words to heart, put them into practice, and thereby receive the benefits of the . However, there are those who hear but do not internalise the message, or perhaps they do not fully grasp the meaning. Some may even become drowsy and drift into a state of mental space, losing their focus. When this happens, it becomes difficult to put the teachings into action, and consequently, one cannot receive the benefits of the Dharma.
If you wish to remain in the presence of the Buddha, you must be someone whom the Buddha can save. This means your heart, your vows, and your actions must align with the Buddha-heart, the Buddha-vow, and the Buddha-actions.
The Transformative Power of
Kind words are not merely polite speech; they are infused with compassion, Wisdom, tolerance, and a vast mind-capacity. When spoken with sincerity, they can:
- Open the heart and resolve the confusion of the listener.
- Dissipate worries and remove the fires of anger.
- Prevent the creation of negative causes and the formation of harmful karmic connections.
When you hear such words, you should always keep a heart of gratitude.
The Path of the Awakened
If one can use the Buddha’s teachings to counsel others, they are performing the work of a wise person and an awakened being. This practice involves:
- Purifying the created by , Speech, and Mind, and eventually severing these three karmic burdens entirely.
- Removing the harm caused by the —greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt—and eventually transcending them.
- Overcoming the traps of the —wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep—and eventually breaking free from their influence.
To guide others in this way is the true conduct of those who have realised their true nature. Namo Amituofo.
