The Profound Benefits of Purification
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
The Burden of the Worldly Life
Life is marked by impermanence. Within this cycle, we are all subject to birth, aging, sickness, and death. For the average person, as the years pass, the number of spiritual attachments they carry tends to increase. Because of their every thought and intention, and because of their deeply ingrained habits, the 'self,' personal ego, and selfishness, they inadvertently attract to manifest before them. As one grows older, these karmic debts accumulate layer upon layer, making the physical body feel increasingly heavy and burdened. Because people rely on their own limited experiences and subjective views, they often become trapped in patterns of stubbornness, self-attachment, and rigid opinions. As accumulates with age, the processes of aging and illness intensify, eventually leading to the inevitable end of life. This is the typical life of a being governed by karma, trapped in the cycle of impermanence and suffering.
The Path of the True Practitioner
In contrast, the true practitioner follows a different path. Through continuous, fiercely diligent practice, they engage in purification, and then more purification. They dedicate themselves to the diligent practice of (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom. As they grow older, what increases within them is not the weight of karma, but the fragrance of their discipline, the depth of their meditative concentration, the clarity of their wisdom, and the expansion of their and virtue. When they encounter people, events, or objects in their daily lives, they do not react with selfishness. Instead, they face and handle every situation with a heart of , acting for the benefit of all beings rather than for their own gain. This is the true benefit of spiritual practice and purification.
The Clarity of Wisdom
One can easily distinguish between those who have truly studied the and those who have not. Their facial expressions, their demeanour, and their very character are fundamentally different. The benefit of purification is that it allows one to see the truth of things clearly. It enables one to understand right from wrong, and truth from falsehood, with complete objectivity. Because they are no longer confused or swayed by material desires or difficult circumstances, their wisdom begins to blossom. Consequently, when challenges arise, they are able to face them directly and resolve them with ease. For those who possess a physical body, the process of purification is not just for the individual; as the practitioner purifies their own heart and spirit, the various beings residing within them also receive this purification, gaining the opportunity to manifest their own innate abilities.
The Skillful Means of Practice
In the path, any innate ability that manifests after purification is used solely to help other beings leave suffering behind and find happiness. Chanting the Buddha's name is the most effective skillful means for this purification. Those who chant must have absolute faith in the Buddha, ensuring that their chanting then becomes a continuous, flowing stream that never stops. If one can reach the state where they chant until there is no thought of chanting, and yet the chanting continues naturally, this is the sign that their meditative concentration has reached a state of success. Prostrations, reciting the Sutras, and chanting the Buddha-name are the fundamental daily lessons of Pure Land practice. They are the most excellent remedies for purifying , heart, and spirit, allowing one to remove defilements and attain purity. Namo Amituofo.
