The Profound Merit of Universal Offering
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The practice of offering has existed since ancient times. It is a profound method to express the sincerity of one's heart, and through this sincerity, one cultivates both merit and . When we speak of the act of offering, we must understand that it is not merely the physical act of giving, but the cultivation of a heart that is aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
Caring for the Sangha
When we make offerings to the Sangha, we are providing the necessary support for those who have dedicated their lives to the . This includes:
- Medical support: Ensuring that their bodies remain healthy and balanced so they may continue their practice with a peaceful mind.
- Clothing: Providing protection against the elements, shielding them from the biting cold and the oppressive heat.
- Sustenance: Offering food that is nourishing, which allows the physical body to remain strong for the work of the Dharma.
- Shelter: Providing a safe place to reside, a sanctuary that protects them from the storms of the world, much like how one would care for their own family members.
Extending to All Beings
Our practice of offering must extend beyond the physical realm. When we make offerings to spirits, we are providing them with a place to belong. By relying on the teachings of Namo Amituofo, we perform to help them leave suffering behind and find happiness, guiding them toward rebirth in the . Furthermore, when we make offerings to those who propagate the Dharma, we ensure they have the resources required to spread the teachings and save sentient beings. Whether it is clothing, food, or the tools for teaching, all these needs are met through the collective sincerity of the community.
The Path of Non-Attachment
There are many forms of offering, but the most important aspect is to remain unattached. If you can offer without clinging to the idea of the giver, the receiver, or the gift, your merit will be like water flowing—leaving no trace behind. It should be like the wind blowing through the trees; it passes through without leaving any mark. When you do not keep these actions in your heart, when you do not seek recognition or reward, that is true merit.
Cultivating the Seeds of
If you offer with a heart that is empty of attachment, the merit is truly immeasurable. However, if your heart is attached to the form of the offering, if you offer with a specific intention for personal gain, then the blessings you receive are limited. Such blessings are like a finite store of wealth; once you have exhausted the good you have accumulated, the rewards will fade away. When these blessings are spent, the suffering of the cycle of rebirth will manifest once again. Therefore, you must learn to practise without attachment. Let your offerings become the solid foundation, the very provisions that will carry you to rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
