The True Meaning of Seeking the

What does it mean to seek the Dharma? What is this Dharma that we are searching for? The Dharma refers to the methods and teachings that guide us toward the truth. Seeking the Dharma means searching for a way to resolve our suffering, to leave suffering behind, and ultimately to attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It is the path that ensures we will never again be reincarnated or subjected to the endless cycle of suffering. Seeking the Dharma is a necessary process for rediscovering your true self. We seek the teachings of the Buddha, and we must do so with a heart full of reverence and sincerity.

Breaking Free from the Cycle of Suffering

Many people believe that birth, aging, sickness, and death are simply unavoidable stages of life. They feel that even if these experiences are painful, one must simply endure them. This perspective arises because people believe that the only path ahead is the cycle of reincarnation in the underworld. They remain unaware of the existence of Namo Amituofo and the of Ultimate Bliss. A sincere heart in seeking the Dharma can truly lead to liberation from birth and death. One must clearly understand that the Pure Land is the magnificent path where you will not grow old, not get sick, and the spirit does not die, leading to rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The Essential Qualities of a Seeker

To be a true seeker of the Dharma, you must cultivate three essential qualities:

  • Faith: A firm belief in the teachings and the path of the Buddha.
  • Sincerity: A heart that is honest, transparent, and free from deception.
  • : A heart that seeks to help all beings leave suffering behind and find happiness.

These three states of mind are the foundation for every practitioner. They must remain steadfast, regardless of external circumstances, so that you may fully receive the benefits of the Dharma.

The Nature of the Awakened Mind

The spiritually knowing heart was introduced by Chan Master Zhongfeng in the Complete Collection of the . It is the heart possessed by awakened beings. It is described as mingling with a thousand differences yet remaining undisturbed, passing through the three periods of time without ever changing. This is the magnificent benefit of the Dharma that one attains through diligent practice. In truth, awakened beings have transcended the ordinary mind; they possess an empty heart that has merged with the earth and all things in the universe. This concept is presented so that all beings may understand the existence of their true self, their original nature, and their ultimate reality.

The Boundless Wisdom of the Awakened

The heart of an awakened being cannot be contained by language or written words. It is immeasurable and boundless, extending without end. This applies to every aspect of their being:

  • Wisdom (Prajna): Their insight is vast and encompasses all truths of the universe.
  • Compassion: Their love for all beings is infinite and unconditional.
  • Virtue and Ability: Their capacity to benefit others is beyond measure.
  • Auspicious Characteristics: Their dignity and presence are perfectly manifest.
