Words of Namo Amituofo:

On the eleventh day of August, two thousand and twenty-three, we reflect upon the weight of our speech. A single word can strike the very heart of the matter, piercing through confusion to reveal the truth. Conversely, that same word can drift aimlessly, landing in a place of no consequence, entirely missing the mark of what is truly important.

The Weight of a Single Word

A single word possesses the power to capture the heart, compelling one to listen with full attention and reverence. Yet, it can also be spoken in such a way that it is heard but not heeded, or worse, it can be harmful to the listener. In such cases, it would have been better for the word to have remained unspoken. A single word can lead one to a moment of profound , where the heart opens and the mind is liberated, as if one has discovered a precious treasure. However, it can also be the vehicle for wrong views and misguided thoughts, which serve only to stain the heart and create .

The power of a single word is truly remarkable. It can be as light as a feather, easily scattered by the slightest breeze, or as heavy as Mount Tai, immovable and profound. This weight depends entirely upon the heart of the speaker.

The Heart Behind the Speech

If the words spoken are driven by a desire to benefit oneself while causing harm to others, or if they are rooted in selfishness and greed, then those words are as light as a feather. They carry no substance and will vanish as soon as the wind blows. However, if the words are spoken with a selfless heart, dedicated entirely to the benefit of all beings, then those words become as heavy as Mount Tai. They are cherished by all beings, who will naturally respect, follow, and adopt them into their own lives.

Words That Heal or Words That Harm

A single word can act like the warm sun, gently warming the earth and bringing life to all it touches. When words are imbued with and positive energy, they cause all beings to flourish and grow with renewed vitality. Conversely, words can also be like icicles—cold, sharp, and freezing. When such words are spoken, they pierce the heart and chest of the listener. Instead of receiving any benefit, the listener is left to suffer the harm caused by such coldness.

The Wisdom of Guiding Others

A single word has the potential to help beings clear away the obstacles in their minds, resolving all doubts and confusion. Yet, it can also be the very thing that plants seeds of doubt, leaving the listener trapped in a maze of uncertainty. This outcome is a direct reflection of the speaker's heart and their level of Wisdom. For those who teach the , it is essential to observe the capacity of the listener, their current practice, and their individual nature before speaking. If one can address the specific point of confusion and provide the necessary clarity, then that is truly skilful teaching. However, if one fails to resolve the listener's difficulties and instead causes further doubt or leads them to retreat from their path, then the speaker must reflect deeply upon their own conduct.

The Supreme Treasure of the Holy Name

A single word can enter the ear and remain there forever as a seed of the Way. The Holy Name, "Namo Amituofo," is the most profound example of this. Regardless of how many aeons have passed, or how many lifetimes one has wandered in the cycle of rebirth, once this Buddha-name enters the ear, it becomes an eternal seed of . It ensures that, in time, one will eventually achieve spiritual success and the fruit of Buddhahood. This Buddha-name is truly the treasure among treasures. You must cherish it, protect it, and use it well in your daily life.
