The Fragility of Existence

Namo Amituofo teaches us that a single moment—a mere fraction of time—can encompass the entire lifespan of beings born through the four modes of birth: from the womb, from an egg, from moisture, or through transformation. Every one of these beings possesses the same true self as the Buddhas. Many of these beings have, in their past lives, walked the path of humanity. However, due to the heavy veil of confusion, they have created negative , which has led them to fall into these various forms of existence.

How many of us truly realise that within a single moment, countless thoughts arise? Each thought takes shape, enters the , and manifests as karma. This is why Buddhism emphasises that the mere arising of a thought is the creation of karma. Therefore, one must diligently protect one's thoughts.

The Weight of Every Thought

When an evil thought arises, you are in that very instant creating negative karma. Yet, people often find it difficult to perceive these subtle, fleeting thoughts. This is precisely why it is so important to grow and strive for the fruit of in your daily life. If your mind is not anchored in the Buddha, it will inevitably be swept away by the currents of delusion.

Every thought should be a thought of the Buddha. In every passing moment, you must ensure that the chanting of Namo Amituofo continues without interruption. If you fail to do so, delusional thoughts will immediately take hold.

The Constant Flow of the Buddha-Name

In the , it is stated: "The chanting of the Buddha's name arises from the heart. How can the accumulation of karma be something that comes from the outside? If you turn your back on the heart that chants the Buddha's name for even a brief moment, that very instant becomes the place where negative karma is forged."

The act of chanting Namo Amituofo originates from your heart, and the creation of karma is likewise a product of your own mind, not an external force. If you stop chanting, even for a fleeting second, and forget the Buddha-name, you are instantly creating the karmic causes that bind you to the cycle of rebirth. These are words of absolute truth. This is why it is so vital to keep your thoughts of the Buddha continuous and unbroken.

The Final Moment of Transition

The transition at the end of life, which determines whether one will be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss, also occurs within a single moment. Therefore, the quality of your thoughts in that final moment is of the utmost importance. If, at the time of your passing, your thoughts are focused on the Buddha without interruption, you will be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss in that very instant. However, if the Buddha-name is interrupted in that final moment, you may lose the precious opportunity to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Transforming the Mind towards

In a single moment, evil can be transformed into goodness, and goodness can be transformed into evil. In a single moment, impurity can be transformed into purity, and purity can be transformed into impurity. Because the speed at which thoughts create karma is so rapid, you must be extremely cautious. The speed at which you can transform your karma is equally swift.

Once you understand this truth, you must be diligent in guarding your Body, Speech, and Mind. Use them wisely. Purify your mind again and again, and cultivate goodness with every breath. In doing so, you will find the opportunity to realise your true self and become an awakened being. Namo Amituofo.
