The Puppet Body: Understanding Spiritual Interference
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on August 1, 2023, at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Changren, a monastic who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. In this discussion, recorded on August 1, 2023, Venerable Changren explores the profound and often overlooked reality of spiritual interference within the human body.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Venerable Changren. When we look at our lives, we must ask ourselves: in this very second, who is the one smiling? In the next hour, when tears fall, who is the one truly crying? Are the various sensations we feel in our bodies—the aches, the surges of emotion, the sudden shifts in mood—truly our own? Or are we merely hosts to a multitude of guests?
Within the human body, there reside immeasurable and boundless sentient beings. These beings possess the capacity to influence, and at times, completely control the human form, compelling us to act according to their hidden agendas and commands. It is a sobering reality that we must face if we are to truly walk the path of the Buddha."
The Hidden Army of
"Within this physical vessel, a vast number of these beings are our own karmic creditors. The sins we have accumulated over accumulated lifetimes are all manifested within the very fabric of our bodies. Every single cell, every tiny capillary, every meridian, and every bone is filled with these karmic creditors. They are not merely passing through; they are waiting, biding their time for the perfect opportunity to seek revenge and demand repayment for the debts we owe them.
The way these karmic creditors seek their due is by latching onto our existing latent habits or bad character traits. They amplify these tendencies, making them more intense, which provides them with greater leverage to invade our internal organs and strengthen their interference. We often think that a sudden, major illness strikes out of nowhere, but that is a misconception. It is not a sudden explosion; rather, every time we indulge in a negative personality trait or a bad habit, we are allowing these spirits to accumulate more power over our physical form. When the Causal Conditions are ripe and their influence has grown sufficiently strong, finally collapses under the weight of these accumulated disturbances, manifesting as severe disease."
The Mechanics of Spiritual Manipulation
"These spirits gather within us, and they can influence our state of being at any moment. Have you ever felt a sudden, inexplicable tightness in your chest? Or perhaps your emotions became unstable without any apparent cause? Maybe you felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to weep? These inexplicable physical and mental reactions are all deeply connected to the spirits residing within you. The of these spirits are sometimes reflected directly onto our physical bodies, causing us to experience their sensations as if they were our own.
At such moments, we often fall into the trap of believing these feelings are ours. We truly believe that we are the ones who want to be angry, or that our hearts are genuinely heavy with sorrow. By following these impulses, we allow ourselves to be controlled, sinking into a low state of mind while our bodies suffer the consequences. We become puppets, dancing to the strings of beings who have long been waiting for this moment of control."
The Cycle of Regret and the Fourfold Assembly
"I have observed that even among the fourfold assembly of disciples—monks, nuns, and lay practitioners—such situations occur frequently. Because their latent habits or bad character traits have not yet been fully transformed, their karmic creditors have constant opportunities to seize control of their bodies. This prevents them from being the masters of their own actions. They find themselves manipulated by these spirits, reacting with various emotions that they later regret. Once the emotional storm has passed, they look back and think, 'Why did I act that way? It was completely unnecessary.' At that moment, they must reflect: was that truly me, or was it my unchanged personality being exploited and controlled by these spirits?
The most common manifestation of this is sudden anger. Whether one erupts in a fit of rage or suppresses the anger, letting it fester as a heavy, stifling feeling in the chest, the result is the same: one is being controlled by these spirits. In the moment of such control, unless one possesses an extremely high level of vigilance and sensitivity, it is nearly impossible to distinguish whether the feeling is one's own or the result of spiritual interference."
Reclaiming the Sovereignty of the Body
"Sometimes, disciples may even feel jealousy toward one another. Beyond one's own habits, this feeling of jealousy often contains the interference of these spirits. The sins created in the past through jealousy attract corresponding spirits who manifest to interfere, making it easier for the body and mind to suffer through jealousy, and even leading one to create further negative because of it. When a body is burdened by too many spiritual attachments, the body's magnetic field becomes chaotic, and the emotions become unstable, making it impossible for the person to remain the master of their own life. This leads to the most common symptoms of spiritual attachment: instability, irritability, chronic fatigue, and persistent feelings of oppression.
How, then, can we regain mastery over our bodies? The only way is to truly transform our inner selves. We must change our personality traits, correct our bad habits, and discard all negative thoughts. By anchoring our hearts in the Buddha-heart and aligning our actions with Buddha-actions, we naturally become less susceptible to the interference of these spirits. Even when interference occurs, our pure heart allows us to discern whether a feeling is truly our own or if we are being manipulated by external spirits.
Every person has the potential to reclaim the sovereignty of their own body and refuse to let it be easily toyed with. Today, the of the Buddha has revealed the mystery of the body, showing us that it is merely a puppet. Once we realise this, we must resolve to change ourselves thoroughly. We must ensure that this body is not used by these spirits, but instead, we must harness its power to follow the Buddha to save beings, elevating the meaning and value of our existence, ensuring that this human life is not lived in vain.
Namo Amituofo."
