The Shared Buddha-Nature of All Living Beings

The Journey of a Fledgling
Namo Amituofo offers this teaching to help us understand the nature of life. Consider the journey of any bird. Before a fledgling can spread its wings and take to the sky, it must undergo a period of rigorous training and development. In the beginning, the young bird is entirely dependent, chirping incessantly with its mouth wide open, waiting for its parents to bring nourishment. It remains stationary, unable to venture forth, relying completely on the care of its elders.
As time passes, the bird begins to transform:
- Feathers begin to sprout, covering its fragile body.
- Its wings grow strong and firm, preparing for the challenges of flight.
- Through the vibration of its wings, it learns to lift itself from the nest.
- Eventually, it takes its first flight, following the path set by its parents.
Initially, the flight may be unsteady, but through persistent practice, the young bird gains confidence. It learns to navigate the skies, following the flight paths of its parents, until it can soar freely without ever losing its way. This is the natural process of growth for the avian world.
The Cycle of Life and
Following this period of growth, the bird enters the next stages of its existence: seeking a mate, incubating eggs, and raising the next generation. Eventually, the cycle concludes with the death of the bird. This is the entirety of a bird's life. However, this journey is not always smooth. Within this process, many small birds face immense hardships:
- Some fall ill, suffering from sickness that prevents them from learning to fly.
- Others are born with physical disabilities or weaknesses.
- Many are unable to forage for food independently or navigate the dangers of the wild.
- Consequently, they are naturally eliminated and pass away.
These experiences are not mere accidents; they are the result of the bird's own past karma and the specific encounters of this lifetime. It is a reflection of the laws of karma and cause and effect that govern all sentient beings.
The Universal Connection of Buddha-Nature
Though they appear as birds, these creatures are living beings just as we are. They possess the same inherent Buddha-nature that resides within every one of us. Why, then, have they fallen into the realm of birds? It is because of past delusion, ignorance, and deep-seated emotional entanglements that they have received the of being reborn as winged creatures. Within this realm, they are trapped in a cycle of birth and death, wandering through the cycle of reincarnation.
How long will it take for them to once again obtain a human body? How long until they encounter the Gate, where they might chant the name of Namo Amituofo, attain Buddhahood, realise their true nature, and achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss? We must realise that all beings around us—animals, plants, trees, flowers, even the dust and stones—are part of this vast, interconnected web of life.
The Path of and
Whether it is food, drink, sentient or insentient beings, or even inanimate objects, all possess a spiritual essence and the same Buddha-nature. Because they are all beings, we should treat them with the utmost respect. The most effective way to help them is to realise one's true nature and engage in the practice of Chao Du. By combining the chanting of Namo Amituofo with the practice of Chao Du, we can:
- Assist these beings in chanting the name of Namo Amituofo.
- Guide them into the radiant Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo.
- Help them break free from the cycle of reincarnation and the suffering of their current form.
- Enable them to be reborn in the Western Pure Land or, at the very least, in the higher realms of humans and gods.
This is the perspective of oneness within our true self and Buddha-nature. It is an act of saving beings that perfectly combines compassion and wisdom.
