Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on the sixth of April, 2024.

The Diligence of the Early Hours

At Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, many students of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre have dedicated themselves to a rigorous schedule of personal practice. In the deepest hours of the night, from one o'clock until one-fifty in the morning, these dedicated practitioners engage in their own prostrations. Even while the world is wrapped in silence and slumber, the spirit of diligent practice is already alive within the temple walls. Following the signal at one-fifty, the community prepares, and by two-fifteen, the formal morning service begins, marking the start of a new day just as it has for countless days before.

The Constant Sound of the Buddha-Name

Throughout the temple, the sound of chanting Namo Amituofo continues without interruption, 24/7. In the stillness of the early morning, this sound becomes even more profound. It is a sound of silence that transcends the physical realm. This sacred resonance has accompanied the fourfold assembly of disciples at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre through every sunrise and every night of rest. It has witnessed the myriad changes of human life and the inevitable shifts of impermanence that occur within the temple and beyond. Yet, this sound remains unchanged; it is steady, stable, and deeply calming, serving as an anchor for the practitioner whose heart may otherwise be tossed by the waves of emotion and thought.

Navigating the Illusions of Impermanence

This sound of silence speaks to us all, offering a gentle reminder of the nature of our existence. It tells us that the world is like a dream, and that external circumstances are constantly shifting. We must realise that only by maintaining a steady, unwavering heart can we find true peace. The cycle of birth, aging, sickness, death is the reality of our impermanent world, but this cycle can be transformed through diligent practice and the realisation of our true nature. To "see through" and "let go" of the illusions of gain and loss is a task that each individual must undertake for themselves. No one can perform this work on your behalf; the skills you cultivate are yours alone to possess.

The Path to

While worldly knowledge is limited in its scope, it can be transformed into something infinite when it is dedicated to the salvation of all beings. By choosing to chant one Buddha's name to the end, you wash away the dust of defilement and begin to see your true nature. The six realms of rebirth may seem real, and the joys and sorrows of life may feel tangible, but they are ultimately illusions. Many people in this world mistake these illusions for the truth, becoming lost within them and finding it difficult to escape, even when they attempt to practise the path. However, if you keep the name of Namo Amituofo close to your heart at all times, your vows and actions will naturally align with the Buddha. It is my sincere hope that all beings will break through their confusion, achieve true awakening, and return to their original, pure state. Let us engage actively in the work of saving the world and rescuing all beings, carrying the heavy responsibility of spreading the teachings of the Pure Land far and wide.
