The Essence of Unwavering Perseverance
Words of Namo Amituofo. Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
What is the meaning of unwavering perseverance? It refers to the ability to remain strong, compassionate, and steadfast in Patience (Endurance), regardless of the environment in which you find yourself. It is a state of being that remains completely unmoved by external circumstances.
In the human world, we grow up in an environment defined by impermanence and constant change. To survive and adapt to these shifting conditions, our hearts often turn and fluctuate along with the world around us. Because of this, it is easy for our character to become unstable, for our hearts to lose their peace, and for us to find it difficult to place trust in others.
When you remain in the same state for a long period, you may easily lose confidence in yourself. You might become preoccupied with gains and losses, lacking the meditative concentration required to stay the course. Without this foundation, you lack the spirit of unwavering perseverance needed to see your practice through to the end.
The Path of Diligent Practice
Practice is not something that can be achieved in a single day or two. It is a lifelong commitment to purifying the filth and defilements that manifest before you. You must work in a grounded, step-by-step manner to cease the accumulation of , turn away from past mistakes and move toward goodness, cease all evil actions, and cultivate all virtuous deeds.
By maintaining an unwavering spirit, you will not be easily led astray by the pull of karma or the interference of . Through your own diligent practice, combined with the Buddha's , you will eventually achieve success.
Overcoming the Ego in the Bodhimanda
When you leave your worldly home to practise, you will live alongside the fourfold assembly (monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen) who have come from all directions. It is essential that you follow the daily schedule of the bodhimanda and work to overcome the personality traits and habits you have cultivated in the world. Your karma and your karmic creditors often manifest through your ego and your personal habits. However, when you dwell in a state of and let go of your rigid personality, these karmic forces cannot find a foothold. This is how you begin to transform your karma.
The Path to
Throughout this process, the spirit of unwavering perseverance is absolutely essential. You must cultivate a heart of gratitude and use and Patience (Endurance) to accept the differences between people, as well as the advice offered by others. This is how you temper your character. By maintaining meditative concentration and a calm heart, you can accept any change that comes your way.
As you advance through your own diligent practice and receive the Buddha's blessings, you will find the strength to move forward. By relying on both your own efforts and the power of the Buddha, you will eventually transform your karma, realise your true nature, and become the master of your own life.
