The Heart as the Master of Our Being

To be serene and liberated is the original, natural state of all beings. Why, then, has this state become a distant goal of our practice, something that seems almost beyond our reach? The answer lies entirely within the heart. It is the heart that leads both and the spirit. If your heart is truly serene and liberated, then even when your body encounters chaotic or impure environments, your heart will remain undisturbed, maintaining its natural clarity and freedom.

Enduring Suffering with a Still Heart

Because we understand the suffering of all beings, we may choose to take on their burdens. Even if the body suffers, we must understand that this situation is meaningful and worthwhile. When the heart remains unmoved and is not shaken by external circumstances, one can maintain this state of serenity. This is the skill of ensuring that neither the heart nor the body is misled or swayed by the external world. Consequently, the heart can remain constantly in a deep meditative state. This serenity was present in the past, it is present now, and it will remain so in the future.

The Conduct of the Awakened

Those who have realised their true nature live with a specific conduct:

  • They are free from all attachments and entanglements. They do not allow themselves to be hindered by worldly obstacles. They maintain a consistent state of inner peace regardless of external conditions.

This is the true conduct of an awakened being.

Nurturing the Spirit through Stillness

What is the spiritual quality of such a person? It is defined by the heart. If the heart remains in a deep meditative state of serenity and liberation, it will naturally support the stability of the spirit. This prevents the spirit from being disturbed by external influences or swayed by the environment. With a stable heart, one can face challenges and tests with a positive attitude, never retreating or falling into despair. Conversely, if the heart is filled with constant agitation and heat, the body will find it difficult to attain peace, and the spirit will struggle to remain stable. When the heart is constantly agitated, the spirit will remain unsettled for a long time, which in turn leads to persistent physical illness and a lack of health.

A State Beyond Time and Space

A heart that is serene and liberated is not limited to a specific time or place. It is not confined to this world or any other. Rather, it is a state that exists at every moment. Throughout the vastness of the Realm, in every corner of existence, this serenity remains constant. Namo Amituofo.
