The Essence of the Pure Land

What is the Pure Land? It is a land that has been purified and made clean. What is purification? It is the process of removing all defilements from one's being. What is purity? It is a state of absolute clarity and cleanliness. Therefore, the Pure Land is a realm of perfect clarity, where not a single speck of defilement remains.

Where the Buddha Truly Dwells

Where does the Pure Land exist? Wherever Namo Amituofo is, there is the Pure Land. It exists in the hearts of those who chant the Buddha's name and keep the Buddha in their thoughts. It exists in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, which was built upon the Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo. Furthermore, it exists here at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, for this is the place where Namo Amituofo truly abides.

When can the Pure Land be seen? It is revealed when the mind is clear and free from all defilements. Where is the Pure Land? It is found in any place that is clear and free from all defilements. What heart is the Pure Land? It is the heart that is clear and free from all defilements. Because the teaching master of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is Namo Amituofo, any place where Namo Amituofo truly abides is, in essence, the Pure Land.

Cultivating the Pure Land Within

How can you make your heart a Pure Land? You must chant Namo Amituofo with single-minded focus. When you chant, you must invite Namo Amituofo into your heart. When your heart is filled with the Buddha and nothing else, your heart becomes the Pure Land, and the Pure Land becomes your heart.

Purifying the Body and Senses

How can you make your body a Pure Land? Consider the interaction between the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) and the six dusts (sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and phenomena), which is the point where the body connects with external conditions. If, regardless of the circumstances, one can transform these interactions into pure goodness, this is the manifestation of compassion and wisdom. Alternatively, by ensuring that only pure and wholesome elements enter the six sense organs, and by preventing the impure and unwholesome from entering, one effectively protects this body.

Elevating the Spirit to Buddhahood

How can you make your spirit a Pure Land? You must use this body to purify and elevate the quality of your spirit. You must cultivate the habit of seeing well, thinking well, and chanting well. As the teaching goes, you must give rise to all roots of goodness and achieve the fruit of Bodhi. This is the fundamental path to goodness and purity.

It is my sincere hope that the fourfold assembly of disciples will transform their body, mind, and spirit into a Pure Land, eventually reaching Awakening and Buddhahood. Spread the name of Namo Amituofo and the vision of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss into the hearts of more beings. When you scatter these seeds of the Pure Land everywhere, the place where you stand becomes the place where Namo Amituofo dwells—it becomes the Western Pure Land.
