The Trap of Worldly Obsession
An Interview with Venerable Changren
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Changren, who shares insights on the nature of worldly attachments and the path to liberation. This conversation was recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on September 4, 2018.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I have observed that everything in this world possesses a certain charm, a magnetic pull that draws people in. Many individuals find themselves easily addicted, sinking deep into the mire of worldly phenomena because they do not understand the true, subtle changes occurring within their own hearts. They are completely mesmerised by the superficial appearances of things. Human desire, once ignited, tends to grow exponentially, feeding on itself like an insatiable fire. People have become so accustomed to these cravings that they have forgotten how to let go of anything. They justify their attachments simply by saying, 'I like it, so what is wrong with that?'"
The Blindness of Desire
"I have spent time in this world, and I have even held power over it. I have seen the many different facets of human existence, but the question remains: can you truly see the reality behind these things? If you do not know how to discover the truth hidden within the chaos, your heart will inevitably become more and more blind. In the end, no one will be able to stop you from falling, because the intoxicating taste of what you love will always make you forget your true self.
There are far too many things in this world that lead to obsession. The bittersweet sensations of life—the , the sorrow, the pain, and the pleasure—these are the 'black hands' that pull everyone deeper into the cycle of samsara. If you are willing to look inward at your own heart, the first thing you must do is identify these unnecessary pollutions that you have allowed to stain your spirit. These are the poisons that harm you. Regardless of what you think you want, if it causes your heart to stir with craving, it is a toxic substance. There is no reason to allow these things to disturb your original, inherent peace."
The Urgency of
"When you change your nature to accommodate these desires, you must also face the stark reality that your life and death are still trapped in the cycle of rebirth. Only when you can truly calm your heart will your life and your existence find genuine stability. All the temptations of this world are designed to confuse you and make you lose your way. If you cannot pass this test, then this lifetime has been spent in vain. I have seen too much of this—the endless cycle of birth and death, and the countless beings who are still sleepwalking through their own samsaric dreams.
I hope that everyone will seize the moments when they are clear-headed. Life is only this one lifetime; I truly hope that you can see the truth clearly and seek liberation immediately. I am deeply grateful to all the protectors, to my grandmother, and to the of the Buddha. Namo Amituofo."
