The True Meaning of Being Alive
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
From the 26th Day of the World Disaster Mitigation and Blessing Dharma Assembly
The Essence of Existence
On the fifth of October, 2019, during the twenty-sixth day of the World Disaster Mitigation and Blessing Assembly, Namo Amituofo provided a profound discourse on the true meaning of being alive. We often find ourselves caught in the rhythm of our daily lives, yet we rarely pause to consider the deeper purpose of our existence. We must ask ourselves: what does it truly mean to be alive? Is it merely the continuation of our physical life, or is it the state of our spirit remaining clear and awake?
The Neglect of the Spirit
Most people are preoccupied with the simple cycle of inhalation and exhalation. We focus entirely on the physical body, yet the existence of our spirit is something that is far too easily overlooked. We must confront the difficult questions: Is your spirit on the verge of death? Do you still possess the spiritual vitality to be the master of your own life? When we ignore the spirit, we lose our way in the cycle of rebirth, becoming mere shadows of our true potential.
Taking Command of Your Life
What should you do while you are still alive? The true meaning of living is to recognise the facts of our existence and to discern which aspects of life are truly worth your time and energy. While you still have your spirit, you must take charge of your own destiny. Do not allow external influences or karmic interferences to dictate your path. For as long as you are alive in this world, you must strive to see your spirit clearly. You must dedicate your efforts to the cultivation of your true nature every single day.
Investing in the Eternal
We must learn to distinguish between what is fleeting and what is eternal. Do not waste your precious time on things that you cannot take with you when you leave this world. Instead, focus your energy on the things that you can carry forward—the cultivation of your spirit and the purification of your heart. Only when your spirit is free from the burdens of the world can you truly find peace. Let us commit ourselves to this path, ensuring that our time here is spent in accordance with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. Namo Amituofo.
