The Truth Within the Test
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on April 3, 2019
Venerable Changren, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre and currently resides there, offers profound insights into the nature of spiritual challenges. This interview was recorded on April 3, 2019, to document her teachings on overcoming the obstacles of the ego and to one's true self.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. When we speak of the tests we face in our practice and in our daily lives, we must understand that they are both real and, in a deeper sense, not real at all. Life is a continuous stream of challenges that demand our attention. Sometimes, these tests manifest through our interactions with others; at other times, they arise from the specific events and situations we find ourselves in. Think about it—the most effective way to respond to any test is through meditative concentration and stillness. When you remain still, you can easily observe your own internal problems, identify the root of the external situation, and clearly foresee the nature of all things. In that state of stillness, you gain the opportunity to change everything. By breaking through these tests, you achieve true growth."
The Nature of Challenges
"I can see the situations everyone is in. Some people easily lose their way when they encounter a difficult state of mind or a challenging environment, while others are able to use those very same conditions to elevate themselves and grow. Every person reacts differently to the tests they face, and their methods of coping vary greatly. However, if you can find the opportunity to change yourself within those moments, that is the most valuable experience in your practice. From these experiences, you can truly grow and ascend."
Cultivating the Heart
"The true elevation of lies in the cultivation of the heart. Yet, the human heart is often filled with constant fluctuations and layers of dust. These fluctuations are essentially what we call your personality, and the dust represents the habits you have accumulated while living in this world. When you are governed by these, you lose the ability to be the master of your own life. You end up suffering because of your own personality, which is a great tragedy. It allows your ego to manipulate everything. You must be cautious and handle sudden tests with care. Accept every challenge that comes your way, and through your practice, step by step, you will find your way back to your true self and awaken to the truth."
Beyond the Physical Body
"Practice is not about the value of this physical body. Instead, it is about truly recognising the existence of your spirit. All the tests you face are designed to break down your attachment to this body and the obstacles that hinder your progress. When you can face everything with a calm and steady heart, you will undoubtedly achieve success in your practice. Your practice should no longer be for the sake of worldly things that you cannot take with you—including this false body of yours. What you truly need to face are the habits and personality traits that keep you trapped in the cycle of being reincarnated, as well as the soul that has not yet awakened. You must quickly find your way back to the truth of your true self. That is the only thing that is truly worth your effort."
A Debt of Gratitude
"I am deeply grateful for the of the Buddha. We are blessed to have the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, the presence of Namo Amituofo, and the assistance of Grandma, who helps everyone in their practice. Everyone must strive to achieve liberation so that you do not waste these wonderful Causal Conditions. I am filled with gratitude for Grandma. Namo Amituofo."
