The Uniqueness of Human Beings and the Path to Awakening
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded by Venerable HaiZe on August 3, 2024
The Sacred Vessel of Body, Mind, and Spirit
Namo Amituofo teaches us that every human being is composed of three essential elements: , the mind, and the spirit. This structure is not unique to humanity alone; all beings residing within the ten directions who possess a physical form are constituted in this same manner. The human body is merely a temporary vessel, a shell constructed from the and the causes and effects of the four great elements: earth, water, fire, and wind. Every cell within this body, along with the complex systems of our internal organs, is a manifestation of these past karmic conditions.
This physical vessel is only able to function because of the presence of the mind and the spirit. From the very moment of conception within the mother's womb, the spirit is already present. At that instant, the karmic forces begin to activate, setting the stage for the life to come. When the lifespan of this physical body reaches its end, the shell decays and ceases to be useful. At that point, the spirit departs from the body to enter the next cycle of existence.
The Fragility of Life and
Many spirits find their lives cut short due to abortion or other unfortunate circumstances. These spirits are what people often refer to as baby spirits. Their departure from the physical form is a manifestation of the karmic conditions and the causes and effects within their own karmic history, representing the karmic retribution of a single lifetime. It is a profound reminder of how fragile life is and how deeply our existence is intertwined with the laws of .
The True Distinction of Humanity
Human beings are often called the most spiritual of all creatures. The primary factor that distinguishes us from other life forms is our capacity to receive and internalise education. From the moment we are born, we begin a process of early childhood education, and as we grow, we continue to receive instruction through various stages of our lives. Within this educational journey, the most vital component is the adherence to moral foundations and ethical conduct. This means living in accordance with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
This commitment to moral growth is precisely what separates human beings from the animal realm. Through education, we can elevate our spiritual quality, and this inner transformation is expressed through our physical actions. In contrast, beings in the animal realm do not receive such guidance. Consequently, their biological instincts and desires are expressed directly through their physical behaviour without the tempering influence of wisdom or moral restraint.
The Limitations of Modern Education
In the modern era, education has unfortunately shifted its focus. It now leans heavily towards the satisfaction of personal needs, the indulgence of physical desires, and the accumulation of worldly knowledge. There is a significant lack of education regarding the respect for nature and the sanctity of life. Furthermore, there is a profound absence of teachings aimed at elevating the quality of our spirit. This is where the wisdom of the Buddha becomes essential.
The Transformative Power of Buddhist Education
Buddhist education serves to fill the gaps left by modern schooling. It teaches us to recognise our true self and understand the reality of the universe. By following the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, we can transform our lives. The path of Buddhist education includes several key pillars:
- Karmic Education: Understanding the laws of karma and cause and effect to guide our actions.
- Moral and Ethical Education: Cultivating virtue and purity to refine our character.
- Mind-Nature Adjustment: Actively cultivating positive states of mind such as , kindness, , gratitude, satisfaction, and an optimistic outlook.
Through these practices, our body, mind, and spirit are continuously purified and elevated. This process allows us to eventually transcend the six realms of rebirth and escape the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death. By doing so, we can rediscover our original, true self and recognise that Namo Amituofo and the of Ultimate Bliss are the true home for our spirit. This is a complete and perfect education, designed to help us realise our true nature and attain Buddhahood.
