The Mirror of the Heart: Surface and Depth

In this discourse from Namo Amituofo, we are invited to contemplate the nature of our existence through the concepts of the outer and the inner. The outer, or the surface, refers to the appearance that everyone can see—our external conduct, our expressions, and the persona we present to the world. The inner, or the hidden, refers to the depths of our hearts, the parts of ourselves that are often covered up and remain unseen by others.

How many of us truly live with our inner and outer selves in perfect alignment? When one is consistent, with the inner heart reflecting the outer conduct, the heart becomes transparent. There is nothing to conceal, no fear to hold, no heavy burden to carry, and no dark corners where secrets reside. This is the state of a heart that is truly free and unburdened.

The Shadow of Duality and the Weight of Secrets

Conversely, when one is inconsistent, the inner and outer selves are divided. This creates a heavy heart, burdened by the weight of things one does not wish others to know. These hidden aspects create shadows within the mind. When we fall into the trap of distinguishing between 'you' and 'me,' we easily succumb to inequality and subjective views. This division inevitably leads to the accumulation of negative results within the laws of and cause and effect.

People often perceive the outer and the inner as two separate entities. However, Those who have realised their true nature understand that they are one, not two. This unity is the very hearts and actions of an awakened being. It is the practice of bringing the entirety of one's being into the light of truth.

Reflections from the Infinite Life Sutra

Within The Infinite Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the , Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra), the Buddha speaks of three profound ways in which this inner and outer unity manifests. These teachings serve as a guide for our own spiritual development:

  • Shadows and Light Permeating Inside and Out:
  • As mentioned in the section on the origin of the great teaching, the Buddha-light shines through both the inner and the outer, illuminating every aspect of our existence.Encompassing Inside and Out:
  • As described in the section on the infinite of life, this state of being is all-encompassing, where the inner and outer are perfectly integrated, harmonious, and unobstructed.Inner and Outer Correspondence: As noted in the section on the opening of the heart and mind, the inner and outer are in perfect sync, reflecting a state where the hearts and actions are unified.

The Radiant Path of Inner and Outer Unity

These three manifestations of inner and outer unity all point toward the same truth: the necessity of correspondence between our hearts and our actions. When there is no separation, when the inner and outer are in perfect harmony, we find that our goodness becomes even more profound, and our purity becomes even more absolute. This is the very essence of the path of practice.

By aligning our inner hearts with our outer actions, we move closer to the state of an awakened being, leaving behind the confusion of duality and embracing the clarity of the Truth. Namo Amituofo.
