The Universal Truth of Selflessness
The Tenth Letter of Bhikkhuni Fuhui
Reflections on the Teachings of Practitioner Su
Bhikkhuni Fuhui, a monastic who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This letter, recorded on August 1, 2017, by chief writer Cao Rudi, captures her profound reflections on the nature of Truth as taught by Practitioner Su during her time at the temple.
Bhikkhuni Fuhui speaks:
"During my time here at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, the two words I have heard Practitioner Su mention most frequently are 'Truth'. I am certain that the fourfold assembly of disciples who practice together in this temple are already very familiar with this term. We often hear people in the world say, 'That is just the Truth! I am not wrong at all.' But what exactly is the Truth? Today, I would like to share with everyone what I have heard and learned here. I believe that if the concepts Practitioner Su taught were biased or incorrect, he could not have attained Buddhahood, nor would the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre exist as it does today. Therefore, please do not doubt these words."
The Essence of Universal Truth
"To have no selfish thoughts and no ego—in short, to be in a state of 'no-thought and '—where every single thought is directed solely toward the benefit of sentient beings: this is the Universal Truth. Truth is the Middle Way; it does not reside in extremes. While this principle may seem simple, putting it into practice in our daily lives is far from easy. It requires constant self-remindfulness and self-reflection. The Infinite Life Sutra contains a passage that serves as the perfect verification of this: 'Regard all sentient beings as one's own self.'
Sometimes people will say, 'What is so difficult about that? I often think of others too!'"
The Practice of Giving and Harmony
"In the practice of the Buddha’s gate, we speak of the Six Principles of Harmony. Among these, the principle of 'sharing benefits equally' teaches us the importance of giving, which is an excellent method for self-examination. In the competitive nature of modern society, earning a living is no easy task for anyone. How many people are truly willing to take the money from their own pockets to give back to society without seeking any reward? This is not something that can be achieved in a day or two. To the general public, it might seem like only a fool would give away their hard-earned money to others instead of enjoying it themselves. Yet, Practitioner Su has done exactly this, and he has been doing so for many years.
However, we believe that as long as the good roots are planted, allowing these virtuous concepts the opportunity to sprout, and as long as we promote these actions throughout society until they become natural and effortless, the opposition between people will diminish. Society will become more harmonious, and the phenomena of competition and conflict will gradually decrease. The Buddha’s teachings instruct us to do good. Who says the Buddha’s teachings are merely a religion? The Buddha’s teachings are a true education for all sentient beings in the nine realms. If we view them from this perspective, Buddhism can coexist peacefully with any other religion. There is no conflict, only inclusion and an endless treasure trove waiting for you to excavate and understand."
A Path to
"Some of you may think that practice and purification are very difficult tasks, but that is not the case. The Venerable Master Chin Kung often mentioned a few key phrases: 'See through and let go,' and 'Sincerity, Purity, Equality, Proper Awakening, and .' These simple words pierce through the core points of practice. If you can constantly remind yourself to use these words as a guide for your cultivation and self-reflection, I believe you will make daily progress. Your pure heart will gradually manifest, and your original nature will be recovered bit by bit, step by step. Having said so much, the most important thing is to implement these teachings in your daily life. Although I no longer have a physical body, I still wish to encourage everyone in this practice together. Namo Amituofo."
