The Vital Elements of Life and the Path to Awakening
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Third Session of the 2019 World Disaster Relief Dharma Assembly

Sunlight, water, and air—these are the fundamental foundations upon which all life on Earth is nurtured. Every sentient being relies on these essential elements to sustain their existence, and without them, no living thing could survive. We exist in a state of mutual interdependence, where countless sentient beings share this same fragile reality, all relying on these gifts to maintain their life force.
The Nurturing Breath of the Universe
There is not a single thing that can continue to exist without these elements. We are mutually interdependent, with countless sentient beings existing together in this shared space. Yet, this existence is also tied to the of being reincarnated, a cycle from which there seems to be no time to escape. It is only when the Buddha-name of Namo Amituofo arrives that the space of our spirit is opened and released.
Within the light, there is warmth. This brightness benefits all things, allowing the laws of the world to operate in harmony, and enabling our body and mind to follow the Right Way. Rainwater moistens the parched earth, nourishing and mind to peace. It washes away the dust and impurities of our worldly existence, allowing our pure nature to manifest.
The Fragility of Existence and the Call to Vigilance
Air and oxygen molecules are essential for every breath we take. Freshness flows through the whole body, and our cells are revitalised. Without light, we do not know the day, and vast panic arises. Without water, a hundred illnesses arise, and it is difficult to sustain life. Without air, all things cease; alas, life is no more. Impermanence arrives at any moment, and we must be vigilant.
The Buddha-name as the Ultimate Path
Do not let the Buddha-name leave your heart. It is the only way to protect your life and depart from being reincarnated. This human body is precious; we must practise to become a Buddha. Do not let this opportunity pass in vain, for the path to the of Ultimate Bliss is open to all who sincerely recite the name of Namo Amituofo.
These teachings were recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
