The Vitality of Continuous Chanting at the End of Life
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
The Foundation of Continuous Practice
If you can uphold the sacred name of Namo Amituofo in every single moment, your chanting will become a continuous, unbroken stream. When this practice is maintained without interruption, your heart remains connected to the Buddha regardless of external circumstances. Even if your lips are not moving, the Buddha-name continues to flow within your heart. This is the mark of success in your meditative concentration, and it provides the surest hope for your rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.
The Perils of the Final Moment
However, if your chanting—whether spoken aloud or held silently in your heart—is interrupted by external interference, you face a grave challenge. At the moment of death, your will manifest to obstruct your path. They may use various methods to pull your spirit away from the Buddha-name:
- Emotional Manipulation: They may appear as the images or voices of your family members, calling out to you to create attachment.
- Illusory States: They may conjure strange or illusory visions to distract your focus.
- Physical Suffering: They may intensify your illness, causing unbearable pain and groaning that breaks your concentration.
At this critical juncture, the difference between rebirth in the Western Pure Land and falling back into the cycle of being reincarnated is determined entirely by whether your chanting remains unbroken.
The Consequence of Interruption
If the Buddha-name is interrupted, your hope for rebirth in the Western Pure Land is instantly shattered. Your thoughts, now swayed by the illusions manifesting before you, will be pulled into different spaces, potentially even the Three Evil Realms. You will be drawn into the cycle of being reincarnated, suffering once again. You must be extremely cautious and vigilant regarding this truth.
Maintaining Faith Until the Very End
Therefore, when you are facing the end of your life, even if you encounter the following, you must remain firm in your faith and keep the Buddha-name flowing without pause:
- The appearance of family members or their voices calling your name.
- The manifestation of strange or illusory visions.
- The emergence of people, objects, or events that you fear or deeply desire.
- Intense physical pain or suffering that makes it difficult to remain calm.
You must continue to chant until you see arriving with a lotus pedestal to lead you to the Western Pure Land. Most importantly, even when you see the Buddha, you must not stop chanting. You must continue until you have safely ascended the lotus pedestal and entered the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Why Many Practitioners Fall Short
My children, you must understand that many who appear to have strong skills in Buddha-recitation during their daily lives do not successfully reach the Western Pure Land at the end. Some may even display auspicious signs at the time of death, yet they have only entered the Celestial Realm, not the Western Pure Land. This occurs because, at the final moment, their karmic creditors appeared to interfere, causing them to stop chanting. Their spirits were then pulled into the cycle of being reincarnated, following the momentum of their . At that point, even if the Buddha's name chanting is being performed by those around them, there is no hope for their rebirth in the West. This is a matter of the utmost gravity.
The Path to True Rebirth
These events that occur at the time of death and immediately after are known only to the person passing away and those with the spiritual vision to see them. Many family members or fellow practitioners remain unaware of the truth, mistakenly believing that the person has reached the Western Pure Land when, in reality, they have not. This is the primary reason why, although there are many who practise chanting, so few truly achieve rebirth in the West.
True rebirth at the end of life requires the practitioner to maintain a heart that is not confused, chanting with the utmost sincerity and earnestness. The Buddha-name must be continuous, and one must be able to remain unaffected by any external interference. Therefore, you must seize every moment in your daily life to engage in diligent practice. Develop your meditative concentration so that external environments cannot influence, disturb, or interrupt your chanting. Practise as if you are saving your own life, chanting steadily and directly. When Amitabha Buddha manifests before you, keep the Buddha-name flowing, ascend the lotus pedestal swiftly, and you will arrive in the Western Pure Land in an instant, fulfilling your vow to reach the Western Pure Land in this very lifetime.
