The Ever-Shifting Tide of Impermanence
Namo Amituofo teaches us that all people, things, and environments are subject to the relentless flow of impermanence and . Nothing in this world remains static; everything is in a state of constant flux. This is particularly evident in the changing nature of the human heart. How often do we find that the intentions of others shift like the wind, leaving us to navigate the consequences of their unpredictability?
Consider the practitioner who, in their daily duties, may falter. Perhaps they have not completed their assigned tasks, yet they offer their own reasons for diverting their attention elsewhere. This can lead to a ripple effect, impacting the work of others or causing interference within the collective operation of the community. Alternatively, consider when a well-laid plan is suddenly disrupted by an unforeseen situation, necessitating an immediate change in course. Sometimes, adjustments are made, yet the other party remains unaware, having never received the necessary notification.
Responding to the Unforeseen
When you, as a practitioner, encounter such situations, how should you respond? It is easy to feel frustrated or slighted when plans go awry or when communication fails. However, the path of the practitioner demands a higher standard of conduct. You must maintain a peaceful heart, cultivate , and expand your mind-capacity. You must face the shortcomings or improper behaviours of others with a calm spirit, ensuring that you do not allow anger to take root within you.
Why is this so vital? Because before one has reached the state of an awakened being, the moment anger arises, the karma of your is triggered. This is a grave matter, for it is your own Body-Mind-Spirit that will suffer the consequences, and no one can bear this burden for you. If you allow yourself to suffer because of the faults of others, you are merely creating a cycle of Collective Karma, binding yourself further to the cycle of rebirth.
The Shield of Compassion and Stillness
If you can remain peaceful, facing these challenges directly and responding with wisdom to minimise any negative impact, you demonstrate the qualities of a truly wise person. This is the mark of one who possesses great mind-capacity, profound compassion, and refined character. A wise person possesses meditative concentration, which allows them to face these sudden, unexpected situations with a heart as still as a mountain lake.
Until one is an awakened being, not only will the world outside you change, but your own body and mind will also be in a constant state of flux. You will witness the inevitable appearance of ageing and illness. If your heart is turbulent, then every event in your life will become a source of turmoil, like waves crashing against a shore. However, if your heart is peaceful, then all things will naturally settle into peace.
Transforming the Mind Through the Buddha-Name
You must learn to accept all changes with a peaceful heart, understanding that everything in this life is merely like a dream or a phantom. Do not let the waves of emotion interfere with the work of the Buddha, for such interference may hinder the opportunity for other beings to be saved. A boundless mind-capacity and deep compassion are the fundamental intentions of your practice.
Whenever you feel your heart becoming agitated, you must take action:
- When your heart is filled with waves of fluctuation, raise the Buddha-name to return to peace and leave the turbulence behind.
- When your heart is filled with dissatisfaction or displeasure, raise the Buddha-name to return to peace and release that displeasure.
- When your heart is filled with resentment or hatred, raise the Buddha-name to return to peace and dissolve those heavy burdens.
24/7, you must chant one Buddha's name to the end. By doing so, you will find that your heart becomes peaceful and secure, and your mind expands into the boundless reaches of the . Namo Amituofo.
