The Limitations of Worldly Knowledge

How do you approach the concept of learning? Your attitude toward this pursuit defines the trajectory of your life. It is often said that learning has no end, and indeed, the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey. In the world, we study to sustain our physical existence and to navigate the complexities of daily life. However, we must recognise that our learning is often heavily influenced by factors beyond our immediate control.

Beyond the unique personality traits and the heavy weight of brought forth from our past lives, our learning is shaped by the environment in which we are raised and educated, the specific intentions and goals we set for ourselves, and the methods and tools we employ to acquire new skills. These factors inevitably influence the results of our efforts. Yet, no matter how much we study, worldly knowledge remains inherently limited. It focuses primarily on the reactions of the physical body and the demands of the material world, often neglecting the essential growth of our spirit. In this finite life, we should be striving to develop our infinite potential and Wisdom, rather than merely accumulating information that serves only the temporary self.

The Boundless Nature of the True Self

In the practice of the Buddha’s teachings, purification is the primary task. When we look into the vast, empty nature of the universe, we find that it is without boundaries and without end. All true learning is contained within this emptiness. Once you find your way back to this original state, you realise your true nature. This is the state of an awakened being, where one possesses absolute clarity regarding all people, all matters, and all environments.

In this state, you no longer need to rely on rigid plans or constant study to know how to act. You simply know. Because you have transcended the habit of making discriminations, you can function with perfect ease. Even when you are teaching others or working within the world, because your true self and Buddha-nature are boundless, you are able to operate with .

The Freedom of Spontaneous Functioning

This is what we call spontaneous functioning. It is the ability to move through the world in perfect harmony with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. You are able to follow the Causal Conditions of any situation and respond with the appropriate wisdom, adapting your approach as needed. Worldly knowledge, by contrast, is restricted by specific subjects, methods, and cultural boundaries such as language and nationality.

The true self, however, is the of the heart. It does not require a specific object or a fixed method to be effective. Whether you are dealing with people, objects, or complex situations, you can remain at peace and function with total autonomy. This is the fundamental difference between the Buddha-nature within you and the knowledge of the world.

The Practitioner’s Path to Liberation

As a practitioner, your goal is to escape the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death. You seek to break free from the suffering caused by the inability to control your own destiny. By engaging in diligent practice, you courageously seek to reclaim your true self, ensuring that you are no longer dominated by the forces of karma and the cycle of rebirth.

The deeper your meditative concentration and the more refined your skills, the more you will be able to live a life of inner purity, Goodness, and true freedom. You will find that you are no longer a slave to external circumstances, but a master of your own spirit, walking the path toward the of Ultimate Bliss with a heart that is clear, calm, and fully awakened.
