Understanding the Nature of Spirits
Teachings from Namo Amituofo as Recorded by Venerable Fa Hui
A Discourse from the Afternoon Offering on August 29, 2025
The Ubiquity of Spirits
Where do spirits exist? In truth, spirits are everywhere. They reside throughout the vastness of the Realm, within the Milky Way of our universe, and across all dimensions of existence. Whether in the six realms of existence or the Four Sacred Realms, these are all places where spirits dwell.
Spirits are present in every corner of the Earth. They are found in the furthest reaches of the horizon, in the depths of the mountains, beneath the oceans, and within the very soil of the land. They exist even within the countless cells of our own bodies. Furthermore, sentient beings with karmic affinity—such as our , attached spirits, and demon crowds—are all forms of spirits.
The Power of the Unseen
Spirits are everywhere; there is not a single place where they do not exist. Their numbers are so vast that they are beyond counting, whereas the number of beings in the human world is finite. Therefore, the number of spirits far exceeds the number of humans, and their power should never be underestimated. If you wish to follow the universal principles, the truth, and the right path, you must develop a proper understanding of these spirits.
If a practitioner in the human world engages in diligent purification, they can open up their perception of space. This allows for communication with spirits, enabling one to hear their inner voices, understand their situations, and foster mutual respect. By resolving the karmic conflicts and obstacles between humans and the spiritual realms, one can effectively improve various Body-Mind-Spirit issues, including premature aging, chronic illness, and mental health situations.
The True Self and the
The true self is composed of the Alaya , which includes the eight consciousnesses and the fifty-one mental factors. It carries every memory from the past and the present, down to the smallest bits and pieces of our experiences. Consequently, the laws of and cause and effect are recorded with absolute clarity and precision within the Alaya consciousness; no one can substitute for another in this record.
There are no two true selves that are exactly the same; each is a unique, individual entity. Depending on their and the causes and effects, they exist in different forms across various corners, locations, and spaces of this world and others. Because of the varying degrees of purification, spirits possess different abilities and exist in different realms, such as the Three Good Realms or the Three Evil Realms. For instance, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and demon crowds all lead very different spiritual lives.
The Transformative Power of the Buddha-name
If you can chant Namo Amituofo 24/7 without interruption, the power of the Buddha-name can break through the limitations of space. It can assist beings within those spaces to leave their current state. If these beings are fortunate enough to receive the Buddha’s light, accept the resolution of their conflicts, and undergo , they can elevate the quality of their spirits and survive in higher levels of the spiritual realms. Even those beings who are currently suffering can, through this process, escape their hardships and find the opportunity for leaving suffering and gaining happiness.
Wisdom from Our Ancestors
The ancestors of the Chinese people possessed a deep respect for the spiritual realms. Because of this, their spiritual quality was often more purified than that of the beings living in this current age of the Dharma’s decline. Consequently, they had a significant understanding of spirits. By being cautious in their speech and actions, they avoided creating the negative causes of the three karmic actions of Body, Speech, and Mind, thereby avoiding the bitter consequences of evil results.
The Path to the Western Land
The of Ultimate Bliss is a pure, virtuous, and high-level Buddha-land. It is a place where all superior beings gather together. To enter this Buddha-land, the basic requirement is to "arouse the mind and single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo." Those who can enter this land as they wish will be able to enjoy all that Namo Amituofo provides. The Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo are each designed to save all beings, bringing them to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss so that they may attain Buddhahood. From there, they can recreate the Buddha-land, save all sentient beings with karmic affinity, and together attain Buddhahood.
