The concept of virtue, encompassing both morality and character, is often dismissed by people in the modern world as an archaic relic that fails to keep pace with our rapidly evolving times. However, this perspective is deeply flawed. Regardless of the era in which we live, and despite the advancements in technology, the shifts in our daily habits, the restructuring of family life, or the changing nature of human relationships and social interactions, the fundamental truths remain unchanged. Moral foundations, the laws of and cause and effect, and the reality of being reincarnated are all closely related to our existence.
The Timeless Nature of Moral Foundations
We must recognise that our moral conduct is not a matter of convenience or cultural fashion. It is the very fabric of a stable and meaningful life. Whether one is a student, a spouse, a parent, a child, a subordinate, or a supervisor, every individual occupies a specific role in society. Each of these roles carries with it unique responsibilities, expectations, and standards of behaviour. It is essential for every person to clearly understand:
- What actions are virtuous and should be embraced. What behaviours are harmful and must be avoided.Which rules are absolute and which allow for flexible, compassionate adjustment.
When we overstep these boundaries or act with impropriety, we do not merely harm ourselves. We create negative ripples that impact our families, our communities, and the broader society. In today’s world, where moral standards are often in decline, the absence of elders and mentors who lead by example leaves the younger generation adrift. Without clear guidance, they struggle to distinguish right from wrong, eventually losing their way and their sense of purpose.
Navigating Our Roles in Life
To suggest that we should uphold these moral standards is not to be rigid or incapable of adaptation. Every historical period has its own challenges, yet the underlying principles of cause and effect remain constant. Even if one manages to avoid breaking the laws of the land, adopting a negative attitude toward life will inevitably lead to severe consequences. When we drift further away from our moral foundations, we create deep divisions within our families and personal lives, leading to endless conflicts and suffering.
If you wish to cultivate self-discipline and ensure that you remain on the righteous path, you must seek out worthy examples to emulate. Unfortunately, such individuals are rare in contemporary society. Because it is difficult to find true mentors, it is equally difficult to maintain correct knowledge and right thoughts. Consequently, many people unknowingly create negative karma and are forced to endure the bitter fruits of their actions. We must remember the fairness of karma: even if one appears to be enjoying in the present, the negative karma created will eventually manifest. It is not that the universe ignores these actions; it is simply that the time for the harvest has not yet arrived. Once your current blessings are exhausted, the suffering will inevitably follow.
The Path of , Concentration, and Wisdom
The Buddha’s teachings are essentially teachings of the heart. Everything begins within the mind, and true transformation starts with self-discipline. There are established norms that all practitioners should follow, which we refer to as the practice of Precepts. These Precepts serve as the foundation of the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom. Without the discipline of holding the Precepts, it is nearly impossible to attain meditative concentration or true wisdom.
When we internalise these Precepts, our conduct naturally transforms. The dignity and grace we project in our speech and demeanour are the outward manifestations of our inner virtue. This transformation is visible in every detail of our lives—how we eat, how we dress, how we dwell, and how we travel. This silent language of conduct is far more powerful than any spoken instruction or rigid dogma. It is the standard of behaviour that all beings should strive to embody.
The Radiance of True Practice
A true practitioner radiates a virtue that flows naturally from within. This virtue is deeply inspiring and commands genuine respect. Such character is far more valuable than any worldly wealth, and it is something that no amount of money can ever purchase. The disciples at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre are truly fortunate to have encountered the teachings of Practitioner Su. Through the example of his conduct and his words, you have been given a clear path to follow. You should cherish these lessons and learn from them diligently, for they will be of immense help in your journey toward rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
