Walking in the World: Teachings from Namo Amituofo
A Discourse for Practitioners
Recorded on 20 October 2024
Words of Namo Amituofo. Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
The Anchor of Meditative Concentration
When a practitioner engages in worldly activities, they must possess the meditative concentration to remain unmoved by worldly conditions. Without this meditative concentration, entering the Five Turbidities and Evil World makes one easily swayed by worldly influences. One may fall into the traps of wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, or be ensnared by greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt.
As long as one is stained by these, one is creating . If minor evils are not halted in time, they will accumulate into great evils, leading to immense suffering, and the time spent in the hells will not be far off.
Purifying the Dust of the World
The fourfold assembly of disciples has come from the world to enter the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre for practice. You must remove and exhaust all worldly dust and stains; only then will there be a time for you to realise your true nature. When the fourfold assembly of the monastic community lives and works together, it is precisely the time to polish your character and refine your skills in practice.
The Vow to End Affliction
In the process of purification, learning how to suppress your afflictions and eventually cut them off is an important lesson in your practice. This is because as soon as an affliction arises, it often obscures your clarity and wisdom. Therefore, among the Four Great Vows, the vow that says, "Afflictions are endless, I vow to end them all," is a necessary cultivation for any practitioner who also vows to save the boundless number of beings. Only by achieving this can you enter the torrent of the world without being swept away by the world itself.
The Source of Human Suffering
To walk in the world, one must be able to understand the suffering of the world. Where does this suffering come from? Suffering arises from the heart and is manifested through karma. Because karma manifests, the heart becomes troubled; when the heart is troubled, the spirit becomes restless, and begins to show signs of old age and illness. Therefore, if you wish to walk in the world, you must be able to resolve your own suffering and transform your own karma. Once suffering is removed and karma is transformed, even those who have realised their true nature can enter the world to serve the purpose of saving the world and rescuing all beings.
A Call to Save All Beings
Students of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, please be diligent in your practice and seek to realise your true nature. There are still many sentient beings with karmic affinity in the world and in the spiritual realms who are waiting to be saved. Namo Amituofo.
