The Nature of Ignorance

In the teachings of the Buddha, the term 'Ming' signifies clarity and understanding. Conversely, 'Wu Ming'—or ignorance—is the absence of this clarity. It is what the Buddha describes as a state of being 'unaware.' To be unaware is to be lost in the fog of confusion. In our original state, our true self and our Buddha-nature are entirely free from such ignorance. Everything within that nature is perfectly clear, transparent, and radiant with light. Yet, because ignorance arises, we become lost.

The Web of Delusion and Attachment

Once ignorance takes root, it manifests as two primary obstacles that cloud our vision: delusions and attachments. These are not separate from ignorance; they are the direct products of it. Because we are ignorant of the truth, we cling to false and develop deep-seated attachments to things that are impermanent. When we act upon these delusions and attachments, we create negative causes. These causes inevitably lead to the manifestation of and the causes and effects. Caught in the cycle of arising and ceasing, we find ourselves trapped in a world of constant flux, where we mistake the temporary for the eternal.

The Consequences of Unchecked Desires

Ignorance resides within our delusions and attachments, keeping us in a state of perpetual unawareness. When we allow ourselves to be governed by this state, we fall prey to the destructive forces of the and the . These forces act as chains that bind us to the cycle of rebirth:

  • The Five Poisons: Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt. These mental afflictions cloud our judgement and prevent us from seeing the truth.
  • The Five Desires: Wealth, Sexual Pleasure, Fame, Food, and Sleep. Without the discipline to regulate these desires, we become slaves to our physical cravings.

When we lack the wisdom to control these impulses, we create the very causes that lead to the suffering of the hells. Because ignorance is the catalyst, we continue to drift through the cycle of rebirth, suffering endlessly without a moment of true peace.

Returning to the Original Face

Before one reaches the state of seeing their true nature, one remains trapped within this darkness of ignorance. Therefore, the purpose of our practice today is to break through this ignorance and rediscover our true self. Within our true self, there are no delusions and no attachments. Through diligent practice, we can gradually eliminate these obstacles. When you finally understand the truth of reality, break through delusion and attain , break through ignorance, and fully comprehend and see your true nature, you will recover your original face—the one you possessed before your parents were born. In that state, you will manifest the inherent Wisdom, virtues, and dignity of the Buddha. Namo Amituofo.
