Breakthrough and Growth
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
True breakthrough and growth are not restricted by the limitations of age, the passage of time, or the constraints of physical space. The fundamental key to this transformation lies entirely within your heart. When you harbour thoughts and , you often yearn for someone else to truly understand you, to grasp the depth of your inner world, and to acknowledge your struggles. However, you must ask yourself a difficult question: do you truly understand yourself? Do you clearly perceive your own nature, or are you merely caught in the web of your own ?
The Mirror of True Guidance
If you do not fully understand yourself, how can you reasonably expect others to do so? If you are fortunate enough to encounter a Buddha, a , or a true spiritual friend, they will understand you far better than you understand yourself. Because they possess this profound clarity, they are uniquely qualified to:
- Assess your specific situation with wisdom and .
- Identify the root causes of your problems and obstacles.
- Provide you with the precise methods needed for your practice.
- Guide you toward genuine breakthrough and spiritual growth.
Their purpose is to help you escape from the traps and dangers of your current predicament. Without such guidance, you risk remaining stuck in the same place, or worse, walking backward into situations even more perilous than the ones you face today. You might mistake these dangerous paths for safety, but in reality, they only lead to further sinking into the cycle of rebirth.
The Price of Purification
Growth always demands a price, especially when it comes to the path of practice. Every breakthrough you achieve is a form of growth. It involves the diligent removal of the pollutants within your heart, leading to a state of purification. You must continue this process, breaking through layer after layer, until the impurities are entirely removed and your original, pure nature is fully revealed. This is the moment of .
The Rarity of the Path
In this Five Turbidities and Evil World, it is exceptionally difficult to encounter a true spiritual friend. It is even harder to meet a Buddha or a Bodhisattva, and those who have realised their true nature are rare indeed. Yet, at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, you are blessed with the presence of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, true spiritual friends, and those who have already realised their true nature. You, as part of the fourfold assembly, must seize this precious opportunity.
Letting Go of
You must not cling tightly to your own views, opinions, or ideas. Before you have reached Awakening, your personal thoughts are often tainted by selfishness and self-interest. They are, in fact, a manifestation of your . You must be willing to let go of these attachments and focus on purification. If you hold onto your ego, how can you expect to achieve a breakthrough? How can you grow? How can you ever hope to realise your true nature?
Instead, you must rely on the teachings and guidance provided by the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and your true spiritual friends. You must learn to set aside your own narrow perspectives and release the "self." Within this "self" that you cling to, there often reside and attached spirits. They are the primary drivers of your confusion and the cycle of rebirth. You must let go of this "self"—your body, your ego-attachment, and your biased views—and enter the state of and selflessness. This is the essential process of Awakening. Namo Amituofo.
