Do Not Take Things to Heart

The Intertwined Nature of Heart and Spirit

The heart and the spirit dwell together within this physical form. They share the same journey through the cycle of reincarnation, and they are both subject to the laws of karmic conditions and the causes and effects. For ordinary people, the heart is a turbulent place where goodness and evil are constantly intermingled. Because the heart is not yet settled, it is prone to constant change, shifting and swaying according to the external environment. It is this very instability of the heart that gives rise to the six realms of existence. Within the vast web of karmic conditions, the heart manifests a myriad of life forms, each reflecting the unique appearance and destiny of its respective realm.

The Path of Purification

The process of spiritual practice is, at its core, a journey of purification. If you can work diligently to cleanse your heart of its accumulated impurities, your original, pure nature will naturally emerge. When this purity is revealed, the Six Roots will function according to their true, inherent potential rather than being driven by the heavy weight of karma. In your daily life, you will encounter all manner of people, events, and environments. The true test of your practice is whether you can face these encounters without being disturbed. If you can learn to not take these things to heart, and keep your mind unmoved, you will no longer be swayed by the external environment.

Transforming Karma and Creditors

Those who have achieved success in their practice do more than simply remain unmoved by their surroundings; they possess the power to transform the environment itself. This includes the ability to transform the hearts of your karmic creditors. When you maintain a state of deep peace and wisdom, the hearts of those who come to seek revenge and repay grievances can be softened. They may shift from a state of resentment to one of peace and a willingness to resolve conflicts. This is the moment when true transformation of karma occurs.

The Final Journey to the West

For those who chant Namo Amituofo with the sincere vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, the final moments of life are critical. At that time, your only focus must be the continuous chanting of Buddha's name. You must remain undisturbed by the presence of karmic creditors and ensure that your mind does not fluctuate with fear or attachment. By maintaining this unwavering focus, you will eventually reach the state where Namo Amituofo manifests before you to guide you to rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The Practice of Detachment

Throughout your practice, you will constantly experience the interaction between your Six Roots and the Six Dusts. Whether it is the images you see, the sounds you hear, the fragrances you smell, the tastes you savour, the physical sensations you touch, or the thoughts that arise in your consciousness, you must learn not to take them to heart. Do not allow these experiences to enter your consciousness, for once they enter, they become seeds of karma. When the conditions mature, they will inevitably manifest as fruits of good or evil consequences. As the saying goes, Bodhisattvas fear the cause, while ordinary people fear the result. If you find that the results of past evil deeds have manifested, you must quickly repent and change your ways.

True Cultivation Through the False Body

Regardless of whether the karmic fruit you experience is bitter or sweet, do not take it to heart. Even if your physical body is suffering, if your heart remains undisturbed, you will not fall into the trap of consciousness. By avoiding the cycle of Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations, and Consciousness, you cease to create new causes. This is the very foundation of spiritual achievement. Do not take the Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations, and Consciousness of this physical body to heart. Although you possess this physical body, it is merely a temporary vessel—a tool to be used for True Cultivation. By not allowing yourself to be controlled by the sensations of this false body, you are also freeing yourself from the control of karma and karmic creditors. This is the true sign of a being who has attained self-mastery. Continue your diligent practice, keep your purification efforts alive, and ensure your chanting of Namo Amituofo is continuous and unbroken. With no thought of the past and no worry for the future, chant one Buddha's name to the end. By entering the state of Buddha-Recitation Samadhi and the wisdom of the Dharani, you will surely reach the time of Awakening and realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood. Namo Amituofo.
