This interview features Lay Practitioner Wu Rongtai, who sought deliverance through at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. After passing away, he found himself trapped in a dark void, but through the compassionate intervention of Practitioner Su and the efforts of his friend, Cai Jinfu, he was delivered to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account, recorded on December 1, 2025, by the chief writer, Fa Tong, details his journey from suffering to the light of the Buddha.
Lay Practitioner Wu Rongtai speaks:
". I am Wu Rongtai, and I am speaking to you now from the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. If it were not for my dear friend, Cai Jinfu, who took the initiative to register me for the Chao Du at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, I shudder to think where I would be. After I passed away, I found myself trapped in a place of absolute, suffocating darkness. I did not know where I was, and no matter how desperately I cried out for help, there was no response. It was terrifying! I was completely alone in that vast, empty space, and as I began to spiral into despair, wondering what I should do, I suddenly heard a voice calling my name.
'Wu Rongtai... Wu Rongtai... are you there?' I did not know who was calling me, but suddenly, a brilliant golden light shone upon me. I followed that light, and in an instant, I was brought here. My was not yet entirely clear, but I could hear the rhythmic, comforting sound of the Buddha's name chanting: 'Namo Amituofo, Namo Amituofo.' I could smell a fragrance that simply does not exist in the human world. The light here is so immense, so warm, and so indescribably comfortable. I rubbed my eyes, needing to be certain that I had truly left that dark, lonely void behind.
The scene that appeared before me was beyond anything I could have imagined. Was this the Western Three Saints? Their towering, compassionate forms were radiating constant light. Beside me, there were other beings kneeling and bowing; some were sobbing with relief, while others were laughing with such that they could not close their mouths! I, on the other hand, just stood there, completely stunned. It was only later that I realised I had been saved. The person who called out to me was the one everyone refers to as Practitioner Su. From that moment of sheer terror, I moved into a state of calm acceptance.
Looking back on my life, I did not commit any heinous crimes, but I was still deeply entangled in the worldly habits of greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt. I was obsessed with wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep—I was tainted by all of them. Thinking about it now, I feel such profound regret. If I had not been so consumed by these attachments, perhaps I would still be living in the human world, but I would have lived differently.
I was a man who knew how to make money, but I was also prone to taking shortcuts. Whenever I saw a loophole, I would exploit it to evade taxes. I made sure not to get my own hands dirty, letting those under me handle the dirty work while the ill-gotten gains flowed into my pockets. Because of this, my health began to fail. My liver was failing, yet no one knew. I thought I could deceive people, but I forgot that one cannot deceive the heavens.
I often invited friends to buy lottery tickets with me, but we never won—not even a few hundred dollars. My heart was filled with such corrupt thoughts! I used to tell myself that if I won, I would retire early, but I had no intention of using that money for charity. Instead, I fantasised about using it to live a life of indulgence with women other than my wife. Of course, these were all just fantasies, but the moment my thoughts became so twisted, the within me woke up. They began to wreak havoc on my internal organs, causing me constant headaches, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. My liver was deteriorating silently, giving me no warning, while I continued to live in my own little world, foolishly believing that my 'minor' evils would never be discovered.
Now, bathed in the Buddha-light and listening to the teachings of the , I have finally reached a place of understanding. I weep as I repent, bowing before Namo Amituofo with a heart overflowing with gratitude. To my friend Cai Jinfu and to Practitioner Su, I owe my life. Without your rescue and the registration for this deliverance, I would still be pulled by the weight of my , suffering the retribution of my karmic creditors, and trapped in the cycle of rebirth. Now, I, Wu Rongtai, wish to express my deepest gratitude to Practitioner Su and Namo Amituofo. I will chant the Buddha's name diligently to repay the grace of the Buddha, the grace of my parents, the grace of my country, and the kindness of my friends! Namo Amituofo."
Namo Amituofo.
