The True Meaning of Following Causal Conditions

What does it truly mean to follow causal conditions? It means to flow in harmony with the conditions that arise, without actively clinging to them or forcing outcomes. For those who have realised their true nature, the interaction between the physical body and the external world is handled with profound clarity. When they use their (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind), they do not allow themselves to become entangled in of the world. They operate from a state of no-mind, no-thought, and . Because they do not dwell on any object, their state is one of emptiness. They are not trapped by the laws of and cause and effect. Instead of being turned by the external environment, they have the power to transform it. This is the freedom of one who has realised their true nature; to be able to move through the world with ease, unconstrained and unattached, is a marvellous function of the awakened mind.

The Trap of Ordinary Perception

In contrast, when ordinary people speak of following causal conditions, they are often merely reacting to their environment. They use their six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) to interact with the Six Dusts—sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and mental objects. In this state, the dusts are considered polluting. Whenever one of the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) makes contact with a corresponding dust, a connection is formed. Once this connection is made, one enters the cycle of the laws of karma and cause and effect. The dusts are no longer seen as empty; instead, they trigger a cascade of delusion, discrimination, and attachment. These manifest as the Eight Consciousnesses and the fifty-one mental factors. This type of following conditions is merely a link in the chain of karmic force, a process dictated by the patterns of one's own destiny.

The Practitioner’s Path Between Karma and

Most practitioners have not yet fully realised their true nature. For them, the concept of following causal conditions exists in the space between their current level of practice and the influence of their past karma. As they interact with the world, the depth of their meditative concentration and the purity of their heart determine how they respond. When the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) and Six Dusts interact, the presence of the ego—the sense of 'I'—often leads to delusion, discrimination, and attachment. These internal states lead to various behaviours. Within these actions of Body, Speech, and Mind, karmic forces find the opportunity to manifest, leading to the creation of new causes and effects. However, through diligent practice, a practitioner can prevent negative karma from manifesting. Even when it does arise, if they possess sufficient awareness, they can stop it immediately, thereby avoiding or reducing the weight of suffering. The life of a practitioner is often a complex interplay of these two scenarios.

The Proactive of the Awakened

Those who have realised their true nature have already used this 'temporary' body to find the 'eternal' truth. They have transcended the ego. Their sole purpose for remaining in this world is to serve all sentient beings. Because they understand the depth of suffering that beings endure, they are not passive. Within the flow of causal conditions, they are proactively working to save those with whom they share a karmic affinity. They overcome every obstacle and difficulty to help beings leave suffering behind and be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss. This is the proactive, compassionate action of an awakened being.

Ordinary people, however, do not understand the truth of reality. They live within the cycle of karmic cause and effect, mistaking the false for the real. They are lost within this confusion, yet they do not realise they are lost. They are trapped, yet they do not realise they are trapped. They are immersed in suffering, yet they do not realise they are suffering. Driven by greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt, and preoccupied with wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, they actively create the causes for further suffering. They continue to revolve through the six realms of existence, taking on new bodies and enduring endless cycles of rebirth.

A Call to the Fourfold Assembly

Most practitioners today live in a state of flux, caught between the path of practice and the pull of karmic destiny. Monastics must remember that they have already renounced the worldly dusts. With their six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) purified, they carry the heavy responsibility of the Buddha's work and the mission to spread the True Teachings. They should be proactive and diligent in seeking the , practising the (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom, and extinguishing greed, anger, and delusion. Taking the realisation of one's true nature as a primary goal is the only way to gain the ability to save oneself and others. Lay practitioners and volunteers, meanwhile, are here to support the monastics and the Dharma centres, assisting in the spreading of the Dharma. Each person must do their utmost to protect the vessel of the Dharma. If both groups can work together to save the world, they will meet the urgent needs of beings in this Dharma-Ending Age who are desperate to leave suffering behind. If the great fortune of sentient beings manifests, they may be sent by Practitioner Su to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Final Exhortation

We must be proactive even while following causal conditions; this is a lesson for the entire fourfold assembly. We must spread the Dharma widely, ensuring that no being with whom we have an affinity is left to sink in the sea of suffering. Everywhere we go, we must be with the beings, and in every place, we must cultivate the right conditions. We must save them, helping them to leave suffering behind as these conditions arise and fade. If we do not act now, when will we? Once this life passes, another hundred years will have gone by. Where will the beings go? Where will they turn? Without the Dharma, they will find no refuge and face unbearable suffering. Therefore, you must grasp the Buddha-name firmly. Chant the name of Namo Amituofo with speed and sincerity, and you shall be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
