Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on the second of October, 2021, these teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju illuminate the boundless potential of the spirit.

The Boundless Freedom of the Spirit

To roam the ten directions refers to the spirit travelling and transforming with . It is the ability to come and go without obstruction, traversing back and forth through every location and every dimension of space. In this state, one is able to offer homage to all Buddhas, teach according to the conditions of the moment, and deliver sentient beings who are lost in the cycle of rebirth.

Mapping the Vast Expanse of the Universe

The term ten directions refers to the vast expanse of space and all possible locations within the universe. It encompasses the entirety of existence, which can be categorised as follows:

  • The four cardinal directions: East, West, South, and North.
  • The four intermediate directions: Southeast, Northeast, Southwest, and Northwest.
  • The vertical dimensions: Upward and Downward.

By understanding these directions, we begin to grasp the infinite scope through which an awakened spirit can travel to perform the work of the Buddha.

The Stillness of the Awakened Being

For those who have realised their true nature, the physical body may remain in a state of absolute stillness. Yet, their spirit permeates the entire void, roaming the ten directions with ease. They possess the ability to move freely throughout these ten directions, acting entirely according to their heart and their vows. Whether it is performing to liberate suffering souls or teaching sentient beings the path to , they do so with effortless grace.

This state of lightness, peace, and freedom is not merely a theoretical concept. It is a reality that can be attained by those who practise diligently in the human world. Just as Practitioner Su has done, those who successfully rediscover their true self can reach this profound level of spiritual accomplishment.
