The Arduous Path of Ancient Seekers

In the past, the way one sought the was vastly different from how it is today. Ancient practitioners were driven by a singular, unwavering devotion. To obtain even a single word or a short verse of the sacred teachings, they would travel across thousands of mountains and rivers. They sought out enlightened masters, hoping for a personal audience to receive guidance.

Often, they would kneel outside the temple gates for days and nights, enduring the biting wind and the pouring rain. This was not merely a test of physical endurance; it was a rigorous examination of the seeker's sincerity. Only after proving their absolute dedication could they finally be granted an audience with a master.

The True Cultivation of Masters

Those masters of old possessed great cultivation. Upon meeting a student, they could instantly perceive the student's inherent potential and the specific obstacles hindering their progress. They employed direct, powerful methods to assist their students:

  • A sudden, sharp shout to break through the student's delusions.A direct instruction to help the student realise their true nature.Practical guidance that provided immediate, tangible benefits for their spiritual growth.

These masters did not waste time; they knew exactly what was needed to help a practitioner awaken.

The Modern Illusion of Convenience

In our current era, the situation has changed significantly. We live in a time of unprecedented convenience: transportation and communication are effortless, allowing us to connect with teachers across the globe. Dharma Jewels are readily available, making it easy to access sutras and commentaries. The internet and various media platforms make the spreading of the Dharma visible everywhere we look.

However, this ease has brought a hidden danger. Because the Dharma is so accessible, many practitioners have neglected the essential work of looking inward. They have forgotten the vital practice of self-reflection, relying instead on external information rather than cultivating their own inner wisdom.
