The Measure of Our Devotion

On the occasion of the , we turn our hearts toward the profound guidance of Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. He reminds us of a fundamental truth that governs our spiritual journey: "One part sincerity brings one part benefit; ten parts sincerity brings ten parts benefit." This principle is not merely a guideline for those entering the Buddha's gate; it is the essential attitude that every sincere seeker must cultivate to truly transform their life.

Defining the Pillars of Practice

To understand this path, we must clearly define what it means to possess true sincerity and respect. These are not abstract concepts, but active states of mind that we must bring to our daily practice:

  • Sincerity: This is the state of being completely genuine. It involves profound reverence, the total absence of doubt, and a heart that is focused on one single point of devotion.
  • Respect: This is the outward and inward expression of our inner state. It includes offering reverence to the Buddha, holding the teachings in high honour, and truly listening to the guidance provided by the .

Conversely, when we lack these qualities, our practice becomes hollow. A lack of sincerity manifests as a casual attitude, lingering doubts, and a mind filled with scattered, wandering thoughts. A lack of respect is seen in an improper demeanour, a rude tone of voice, or the stubborn insistence on one's own opinions and views over the wisdom of the Buddha.

The Obstacle of Doubt

We invite you to pause and reflect: with how much sincerity and respect are you currently seeking the Dharma? If you are seeking the truth but your heart is clouded by doubt, you are actively damaging your own faith. In the very moment that doubt arises, your connection to the truth is severed. How, then, can you expect to receive the true benefits of the Dharma? Doubt acts as a barrier, preventing the light of wisdom from penetrating the depths of your .

The Necessity of Action

Furthermore, the Buddha's teachings place the greatest emphasis on the act of practice. It is not enough to merely understand the concepts intellectually; one must put them into action. If you are filled with doubt, you will find it impossible to commit yourself to the necessary actions of the path. Without consistent, dedicated practice, there can be no moment of true realisation or attainment of the Way. We urge you to be cautious and mindful of your own heart. Do not let your progress be hindered by the shadows of hesitation. Instead, let your sincerity be your guide, and let your respect be the foundation upon which you build your journey toward the of Ultimate Bliss.
