The Amitabha Village: A Sanctuary for the Soul
Teachings from Master Shang Xuan Xia Zang
Recorded on March 26, 2019

The Illusion of the Human Home
To the people of this world, a home is a place of shelter, a refuge from the wind and rain. We rely on our homes for everything: it is where we eat, sleep, and gather with our families. Whether the weather is fair or stormy, we view our homes as our sanctuary. Even when we face various problems in the outside world, returning home allows us to wash away our worries, relax, and find rest. We spend our entire lives within this cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and we mistakenly believe that this is all there is to life.
When death arrives, the physical body is destroyed and must leave this home. It is buried in the earth or cremated, and ’s connection to this world comes to an end. We depart from this home of birth and death, and our spirits are reborn into the next realm according to the laws of and cause and effect, bringing this human chapter of our existence to a conclusion. The family members we were once so close to will eventually meet again in future lives, but after drinking the Meng Po’s soup, they will be transformed and will no longer recognise one another. Our spirits drift endlessly through the six realms of rebirth. For such a weary soul, where can one truly find a place to rest? The Village at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre provides a stable, final destination for those seeking to return to the Western Pure Land.
The Purpose of the Amitabha Village
The philosophy behind the Amitabha Village is rooted in the needs of those who have made the vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Before one can return to their true home in the West, they require a place of residence in this human world—a place where the heart has something to rely upon and the body has a place to belong. In this pure environment, everyone shares the same noble aspiration. While living here, individuals remain independent, yet they also care for one another. They can live in peace, without worrying about the necessities of food and shelter.
- A Focused Environment:
- While alive, practitioners have a place where they can focus on chanting Namo Amituofo without being disturbed by external .A Peaceful Transition:
- When one's lifespan reaches its end, although the body’s connection to this world is severed and it can no longer survive in the human realm, the spirit can continue to chant Namo Amituofo and successfully fulfil the wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.Spiritual Migration: The spirit does not need to enter the cycle of rebirth; instead, it simply leaves this home to migrate to another world.
Transcending Emotional Entanglements
We must recognise that the emotional entanglements of this world are merely links in the chain of the laws of karma and cause and effect. The attraction we feel toward one another is a form of gravitational pull within the cycle of rebirth. This is an illusory world, and every second is in a state of constant change. We cannot hold onto what we once possessed. The causal conditions we encounter pass by and vanish; the past cannot be recovered, and even if it appears again, it is never the same as it once was. We must realise that the physical body is a false vessel, arising and ceasing according to different causal conditions. This is the nature of the human world.
The Eternal Nature of the Western Pure Land
The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is an eternal, indestructible world. Those who enter the Western Pure Land are born from lotus flowers; they do not age, they do not fall ill, and they do not die. It is a place of supreme happiness. In that realm, there is no wind or rain to disturb the peace. One does not need to eat or sleep, yet one is always filled with boundless energy. There is no sickness, no worry, and no distress. There are no emotional entanglements, only pure and Wisdom. It is a world that is simultaneously empty of ego and filled with everything one could ever need. Those who reside in the Amitabha Village at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre have the precious opportunity to enter this magnificent realm.
A Blessed Connection at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre
Practitioner Su is deeply connected to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and through this connection, the Amitabha Village has been blessed with an ideal location. Currently, the Amitabha Village is situated right next to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. This allows residents to participate in the assemblies and activities of the temple, and to stay close to Namo Amituofo, true spiritual friends, and the Venerable ones and volunteers. Entering the Amitabha Village is a sign of having a deep karmic affinity. We hope that all beings will cherish this connection and work together to become beings of the Western Pure Land.
