The Art of Skilful Transformation
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe
the Light Within
Namo Amituofo offers these teachings on the vital practice of Skilful Transformation. When you find yourself lacking awareness, you must use the method of Skilful Transformation to immediately bring forth your awareness. If you have forgotten to chant the Buddha-name, use this same skill to immediately return to chanting Namo Amituofo. When your personality flares up and anger manifests, use Skilful Transformation to become aware instantly, stopping the ego and the fire of anger from burning further. Whether you are engaged in worldly affairs or pursuing the path of spiritual practice, the ability to skilfully transform your physical actions, your speech, and your intentions is an essential lesson for all Buddhist practitioners.
Navigating the Currents of
Within the five turbid realms of this world, the cycle of reincarnation and the force of karma are constantly in motion. Good and evil karma are often intermingled, manifesting through our three primary channels:
- Body Karma: Manifesting through the actions of our physical body and .
- Speech Karma: Manifesting through the words spoken by our tongue.
- Mind Karma: Manifesting through the thoughts and intentions of our mind.
Awareness is the most important condition for transforming karma. An awakened person knows how to cease evil before an evil thought even arises, ensuring that evil has no opportunity to manifest. If something does manifest, it will be entirely good, thereby allowing one to give rise to all and achieve the fruit of . This is the natural state of things, not something that is forced or artificial.
The Wisdom of Pre-emptive Action
If you wait until an evil thought has already manifested before you attempt to transform it into good, you have already failed to give rise to the roots of goodness. Because the evil thought has already arisen, you have already planted a negative cause. When these conditions are ripe, you will inevitably reap the evil consequences. Therefore, one who is skilled at transformation acts before the intention arises, before acts, and before the words are spoken. By transforming these into goodness and purity, you prevent evil actions, speech, and thoughts from ever taking hold, thus sparing yourself the suffering of reaping evil consequences when the conditions mature.
Cultivating Harmony in Relationships
A practitioner skilled at transformation handles interpersonal challenges with grace:
- Receiving Criticism: If someone points out your faults or shortcomings, do not give rise to unhappiness or anger. Instead, hold a heart of gratitude and immediately change your ways. If you allow your personality to remain rigid and refuse to accept the advice of others, your faults will persist, creating negative causes that lead to negative results.
- Resolving Disagreements: If your opinion differs from another, you must respect them. Do not raise your voice; keep your tone calm and your attitude gentle. Seek a method that both parties can accept, harmonising your views so that you can move forward together.
The Unmoved Mind and Spiritual Protection
Those who are skilled at transformation are selfless and possess . By maintaining an unmoved mind, they are able to transform their environment rather than being turned by it. If you notice that your heart is being swayed by external circumstances and is beginning to fluctuate, please chant Namo Amituofo immediately to return to your original state. You must possess the skill to transform your environment instantly. Only then can you stop the from manifesting and prevent the opportunity for external spiritual attachment to occur.
Honouring the Buddha-Nature in All
A practitioner skilled at transformation is always harmonious and joyful. They are able to get along well with everyone, seeing the good and the virtuous in every person they encounter. When you respectfully honour others, you are, in truth, honouring and respecting your own true self and your own Buddha-nature. Namo Amituofo.
