The Living Universe Within

Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers us a profound perspective on the nature of existence. We often perceive the world through the limitations of our physical , yet the truth is far more expansive. Consider a grain of sand: it possesses a form and a physical structure, but within that sand resides a spirit. Therefore, even a grain of sand is a sentient being. For the spirit dwelling within, that physical form serves as its body. This principle extends to every material object we see, to all earthly creatures, and even to the dust and sand that surround us. Everything contains a spirit, and everything is a sentient being.

Our own human body is no exception. It is a vast, complex world, a universe unto itself. Within this physical form, there exist countless sentient beings, including an uncountable number of cells, infinite spirits, and various attached spirits. These inhabitants are not separate from us; they are deeply intertwined with our own history across accumulated lifetimes.

The Multitude of Our Inner World

The beings residing within our bodies are diverse and numerous. They exist in various states and locations within our physical structure:

  • Cellular Life: There are sentient beings within our cells and surrounding them.
  • Internal Systems: Our blood, our internal organs, and our entire physiological structure are home to these spirits.
  • Karmic Connections: Many of these beings are our parents, teachers, , and family members from our past lives.

These beings are intimately connected to our present state. They respond to the fluctuations of our thoughts, our behaviours, our speech, and the overall condition of our body, speech, and mind. When our thoughts are clouded or our actions are unwholesome, we attract negative , which manifests as the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

The Hidden Interference

is a space where these spirits exist, survive, and carry out their activities. Just as we live in the world, they live within the space of our body. Their lifespans and states of existence vary greatly. While the cells undergo their own cycles of birth, aging, sickness, and death, the spiritual beings are influenced by their own and karmic seeds:

  • Some remain in a state of deep slumber.
  • Others wait for the right conditions to settle karmic debts, repay kindness, or seek revenge according to the laws of karma and cause and effect.
  • Some attached spirits move in and out of the body at will.
  • Beings from the demon realms may seize upon our individual personality traits to create obstacles, interfering with our daily lives and our physical health.

This is merely a glimpse into the complex reality of the world within our bodies. There are also ancient demons in the Realm—beings with immense power accumulated over aeons. Some possess the ability to shrink their spirit to the size of a molecule or a speck of dust, making them nearly impossible to detect. This means that our inner universe may already be harbouring such beings, whether they are currently dormant or already awake and actively interfering with our well-being.

The Healing Power of the Holy Name

How, then, can we navigate this complex inner reality? The Holy Name of Namo Amituofo possesses the unique power to transcend both time and space. The effectiveness of this Holy Name depends on the practitioner's level of purity, the strength of their wisdom, the depth of their vows, and the power of their merit. When you awaken your Bodhicitta and focus your mind entirely on chanting the Holy Name of Namo Amituofo, the power of that chanting can permeate your entire being.

When you chant with a sincere and focused heart, every spirit and every cell within your body can hear the Holy Name. They receive the purification and the merit inherent in the Buddha-name. This process allows for the removal of impurities and the cultivation of purity. It cleanses the spirits and cells within you, and it can even help these beings, including the demon crowds, to turn from evil toward Goodness. Through diligent practice—chanting until you are pure, and then even purer, until you are kind, and then even kinder—you transform this body, this universe, this world, into a pure and virtuous Buddha-land. This is the moment of .

My dear children, is it not time to chant Namo Amituofo with true sincerity? Is it not time to chant with all your heart? To chant the Holy Name 24/7 is an act of supreme . It is a way to save yourself and to save the countless sentient beings residing within your own body. Namo Amituofo.
