Teachings from Namo Amituofo
The Weight of the Past and the Cloud of
On Sunday, the 30th of April 2017, at four fifty-seven in the morning, I was engaged in the diligent recitation of the Infinite Life Sutra. As I sat in the quietude of the early morning, I felt a heavy, persistent state of being drowsy clouding my mind. It was as if I were drifting through a different space, unable to maintain the clarity required for my practice. I turned to Namo Amituofo for guidance, seeking to understand the source of this interference that hindered my focus.
Namo Amituofo spoke to me with infinite , urging me to begin the record of this encounter. I bowed in gratitude, acknowledging the weight of my own shortcomings. The state of being drowsy was not merely physical; it was a manifestation of karmic obstacles that had long been dormant, now surfacing to be addressed. Namo Amituofo reminded me that while the state of being drowsy is difficult to overcome, it is only through a firm and courageous heart that one can break through such barriers. I confessed my shame, for I had been struggling deeply with this, and I humbly requested the compassionate guidance of Namo Amituofo.
The Voice of the Shadow
As I struggled to maintain my focus, a voice suddenly emerged from within—a voice that was not my own. It was arrogant, mocking, and filled with a cold, sharp intensity. It claimed to be one with the practitioner, asserting that no one could defeat it and that it would never be looked down upon. It was the voice of a spirit that had long been tethered to the practitioner, a remnant of a life lived in the shadows of the past. When I asked the spirit if it was the intense force within the heart of Lay Practitioner Li, it replied with defiance, claiming that it would never be defeated and that it would always stand above others.
I questioned the spirit regarding why it caused such intense drowsiness, and why it seemed to flicker in and out of with such rapid speed. The spirit remained silent, seemingly caught in the grip of its own internal turmoil. When it finally spoke, it revealed that its actions were driven by the pain of betrayal. It identified itself as a spirit from thousands of years ago, a remnant of a time when it existed as a cat spirit. It had been deeply hurt by men it once loved, and in its rage, it had sought revenge, consuming their hearts and binding them to its own existence. This spirit carried the weight of countless broken hearts, leading to a cycle of fear, helplessness, and emptiness that it projected onto the current practitioner.
The Cycle of Karmic Debt
The spirit described its past with chilling clarity. It had once been a beautiful woman, but its true form was that of a scarred, unsightly cat. It had used its intelligence and sensitivity to manipulate those around it, yet it was constantly haunted by the fear of being abandoned. Every time it succumbed to its base desires and consumed human life, it would revert to its true, feline form. It spoke of a male cat from its past—a soul it had once known—who had pursued it relentlessly. Now, that same karmic connection had resurfaced in this life, and the spirit was terrified of the debt it owed. It explained that its mind was filled with a tangled web of emotional entanglements, or karmic debts, that stretched back through countless lifetimes. These attachments were stored within the , waiting for the right conditions to manifest. It was these very attachments that caused the practitioner to feel such profound confusion and emotional instability. The spirit had been hiding these debts, but the power of the had brought them to the surface, forcing a confrontation that could no longer be avoided.
The Compassionate Intervention
I felt overwhelmed by the intensity of the spirit's presence and the pain it carried. I asked Namo Amituofo for guidance, for I felt unable to continue the dialogue alone. Namo Amituofo, in His great compassion, intervened directly. He spoke with authority, commanding the spirit to let go of its hatred and to cease its interference. He reminded the spirit that the cycle of rebirth is a long and arduous journey, and that holding onto past grievances only leads to further suffering. When the spirit resisted, Namo Amituofo called upon Skanda . The energy in the room shifted instantly. The spirit, which had been so arrogant and fierce, began to scream as it was compelled to release its hold on the practitioner. With the assistance of the Dharma protectors, the spirit was bound and sent to the heavenly prison, where it would have the opportunity to repent and cultivate its good roots over many eons. Namo Amituofo’s light shone upon the practitioner, purifying the space and restoring clarity to the mind.
A Path Toward Renewal
Namo Amituofo then offered final instructions for the practitioner’s recovery. He explained that the void left by the departing spirit would be filled with the purity of the Dharma. He urged the practitioner to cherish this new opportunity for growth, to accumulate merit, and to transform their personal habits and ego. The path forward is one of sincerity, pure practice, and the constant recitation of the Buddha-name. The practitioner was encouraged to let go of the past entirely, for the events of the past no longer have a place in the present. By focusing on the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, one can rediscover their original, true nature. The session concluded with the dedication of merit to all the spirits involved, ensuring that they too might find their way to the of Ultimate Bliss. Through this experience, we are reminded that no matter how deep the shadows of our past may be, the light of Namo Amituofo is always there to guide us home.
